It's one of the biggest engineering feats in the world - and I drove over it everyday on my way to school.

Slightly and the pacific has a greater tidal range, but mostly it was because of the geography that had to be traversed.

A straight cut (as was orginally attempted by the French) was nearly impossible to make.

A good way of thinking about the canel is that it is actually a river that has two outlets - when you enter the canel, you are going upstream and increasing in elevation, then you reach it's elevation peak, then you start going downstream to the outlet in the other ocean.
