So i've had my my Ruger 10/22 for a while now, and have been contemplating my next rifle. I won't be getting it for another three months now, so i have time to do a lot of research.

Initially i wanted to step up to a .223 with the intention of later buying a .308. right now i'm just punching paper but want to hunt later on. After a bunch of reading online, i've started leaning towards a .243. Slightly more recoil, but more flexibility. I know .223 is more common, but i hope to do my own reloading soon, so availability of ammo isn't a huge issue.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

edit goal is 500 yards on paper, and varmint too

What sort of rifle are you looking to buy? What do you plan on using it for?

If you want something cheap just to have fun with Ruger makes the Mini-14 (5.56x45mm) and the Mini-30 (7.62x39mm).

I think for the money it's hard to beat a Marlin lever rifle for just casual shooting. :)

I had a Marlin 336C but liked my Winchester Model 94 a lot better. Don't have either any more. But it's time to get another rifle. I wanted to be armed before the civil war starts.

Yup, the Win 94 is a good rifle too. You can't buy a new one anymore, well, not a real one anyway. The Browning plant in Utah is making them now but they aren't real Winchesters. :(

Browning makes a great rifle though, don't get me wrong.
