What would you estimate a "custom built" AR with the basic configuration cost? That sounds like it could be a fun project.

I'm fairly interested in a Nagant, simply because they are the kind of gun i was interested and they are terribly cheap. Do the bores usually need some work? What are some of the common problems associated with them?

I own over 20 Mosins and have looked at a lot more. Typically the worst thing you'll find is dark bores occasionally with a little pitting near the crown or chamber. Sometimes the crown can also be worn from improper cleaning when the rife was in service.

Usually they are in fine shape though.

I bought a nice M44 about a month ago but haven't shot it yet because I haven't had the headspace checked. No one around here seems to do it except for one shop, who is a mom-and-pop operation with very inconvenient times. How many have you seen with incorrect headspace?

About 1 in 6ish I'd say on the Russians, haven't found a Finnish one out of spec yet. It's cheap enough just to buy your own set of gauges and worth the peace of mind.

I'm also wondering if there are any WWII era guns that are in that price range. An M1 Garand would be sweet but im sure you would have to pay through the nose.

Also, any other cool guns under 500 dollars that im not hitting on... suggest!

You might want to actually consider how well a gun shoots before you worry about how cool it looks.

I mean unless of course you are just some lame ass poser who only wants one so he can take pictures of himself being badass with the gun and post them on the Internet so that everyone will think "OMG he is teh koolnez!"

I slightly disagree with that. The looks are what make people interested in some of the weapons. Buying a gun that is going to be used for nothing more than fun times based on "how it shoots" would basically mean that AK's are out of the running...there are plenty of better shooting, more accurate weapons out there.

Granted, he should actually know how to fire the damn thing, but aesthetics is a valid reason to purchase or not to purchase a weapon.

'neat' is not a good criteria to choose a gun, hopefully this will not be your first.

An AK/AR makes a decent gun on both sides of the price spectrum. There are pros and cons to each.

If $500 is the limit..you will be pushing it for an AR if that's including initial ammo.

The Nagants are a great gun to test the waters. If you find you don't like shooting, you are only out a little bit and probably could even sell it at a gain once you clean it up from 'surplus mode'.

Even an AR is not a no-brainer though. There are cons with it as well, but like the AK there are plenty of people that reengineered things.

I'd add like others said above, any surplus or used gun in general should be checked out by a pro prior to firing.

I'm buying an M1 in a week or so too, and yes its pricey.

Would this be a good deer rifle? How about mounting a scope on them, possible?

How good is that Sig 550 on aimsurplus over an AR15? That seems reasonably priced compared to Sig's pistol prices. I loved my brother's .380 with the rubberized? contoured handle, rarely any recoil and I could group pretty well on multiple shots.

Most people saying the handpick isn't worth it, as they are generally great looking.

Hey what's the deal with these USGI mags? Are these knockoffs posing as USGI, because 10 bucks a pop seems to be really cheap for 30 round magazines.

That is about right for USGI mags, even mags with upgraded magpul followers.

I get mine for around the same price from 44mag.com. They also have the cheapest prices on USGI M14 magazines as well, less than half of what everyone else charges for them (and they are real USGI mags too).

Spend the money and build yourself an AR or buy a real AK clone if you want something that will last.

Lancaster AK-47 clones - good

Vector AK-47 clones - better

Arsenal AK-47 clones - best

Saigas cost about $250 and are excellent quality. They're made in the same factories as the AK-100 series. Yugo M70 underfolders are usually $400-$500 and are also solid quality.

$10 - $15 is about the going rate for USGI STANAGS.

It'd be a fine deer rifle. You can drill and tap the receiver for a scope mount or just get a scope base that will replace the rear sight. You can probably find 7.62x54r soft points at your local sporting goods store.

It's a 556 and I think you meant .308 even though they're chambered for 5.56. Nit-picking aside they are probably well made rifles, but I'd rather have an AR since there's way more aftermarket stuff for them and parts are very easy to come by should you need them. Any gunsmith will know how to work on them.
