Just ran across this: James Joseph Minder, chairman of handgun maker Smith & Wesson Holding Corp., resigned after a published report revealed he'd spent as much as 15 years in prison decades ago for armed robberies and a bank heist. As PC as S&W is, they didn't do a criminal background check on the guy?

Ok, they made a bad deal. Big whoop. They've gotten a lot better since the agreement days and their sales are much better now that there is new management.

They can still make a nice gun and thats all I have to say about that. I'll take the S&W over the "Nobody needs more than 10 rounds" ruger any day of the week.

I want to get something in .357 magnum, with at least a six inch barrel. I was thinking something along the lines of a Ruger GP-100 or a Smith & Wesson 686 Plus.

I've heard that the S&W has the better factory trigger, but the Ruger handles hot loads better and is $150.00 cheaper. I don't really care about the price though, as long as I get a quality product that I like. Any thoughts on these two, or maybe another .357 from a different company?

Do yourself a favor and just buy a S&W .44 Magnum with an 8" barrel. I've owned a few snub nose .38's and a 4" .357 Magnum all of which I ended up unloading over the years. You can't hit sh!t with the snub nose .38's and I just never shot the .357 enough to justify keeping it. I always wanted a .44 Mag so I bought an 8" model 629 about a year ago. Man, this gun is a keeper. It is pleasant to shoot, very powerful and extremely accurate. I love it.

I have both a .357 S&W and a .357 Ruger Blackhawk. The Smithy has about an inch longer barrel and the grips are a touch thicker. The Ruger does have Hogue grips on it though. I bought it that way so I cant tell you have much thicker or thinner the stock handgrip is on the Ruger.
Otherwise, I really dont have a personal preference between the Ruger and the S&W. I'd probably lean to the Ruger for the grips, since the Wesson is a *touch* thick in the hands.

I want a .357 for the purpose of plinking at the range, for the most part. Most of the time I will just be feeding it .38 Special ammunition, but will keep some .357 around for varmint hunting. The two legged kind, should they get nosey and go places they're not wanted, like my home. ;)

It's not an either/or situation for me. I plan to pick up a .44 as well, just not at this moment.

I love .357's. Probably my most favorite pistol caliber for everyday shooting. The .44 gets a bit rough after a while. But a .357, man that'll put a grin on my face and keep it there all day.

You could shoot 44 specials thru the 44. Another vote for the 629.

That 686P sucks ass. My friend has the 6" barrel model, and it has the worst trigger. DA trigger requires the power of Congress to fire. SA is not as bad, but still horrible. I'm also not a fan of such skinny grips either.

A .44 mag with an 8" barrel? That's not a gun, that's a cartoon!

The only one I can comment on is the .357 S&W and I LOVE that gun. For the price it is also a pretty good value.

Actually, it's quite pleasant to shoot. A little on the heavy side but I've shot 150-200 rounds through at one time and I don't have large hands. Here's a pic of my hand cannon.
