You're allowed to sell guns to a private party without going through an FFL in most states (this is the "gun show loophole" you hear about in the news). You just verify that they're a resident of your state and old enough to purchase a firearm by taking a look at their driver's license.

When you go to a gun store they have a FFL which makes they're licensed to sell guns & will make you go through a background check and stuff to buy your gun.

OK but surely it (this proposed system) could be regulated in the same way as cars, you simply sign over a slip which then gets sent off to the regulating authority to update the registry for that sale.

I have severe mental health problems. I see a physiciatrist and a psychologist. I am shunned IRL. I attempt to annoy people for attention
Your #1 problem is self control in every area of your life.
That will solve alot of your problems.

I guess. I doubt many people would bother.

Also you'd have the problem of getting the existing ~300 million guns currently in the US registered :awe:

Yeah that's a point. In all honesty I thought guns were already registered everywhere in the US, you see on TV

Police officer: "I see you've got a Glock registered to your name"
Suspect: "Yeah but it was stolen so someone else used it to shoot that german nun"

Nooope. A few states have registration for handguns (California) but AFAIK there is no state which requires long guns to be registered. That's why no one actually knows how many guns are in the US.

Wow. You learn something new every day. I assume that insurance companies probably have the best record.

Also, how much are guns?

Every nation that has banned firearms or severely restricted them starts with registration and a list of owners first. Every single one.

NO. HELL NO.

they can cost anywhere from $1 to $1,000,000 or more.

unless you're gonna be more specific, like.. how much is a colt 45, or how much is a saturday night special...

ask a stupid question... get a stupid answer.

that's like asking.. how much is a car?

It depends. The cheapest are usually military surplus rifles. You can buy a Mosin Nagant 91/30 (the Soviet Union's main WW2 rifle) for $80 + shipping.

For new guns, .22 rifles usually start at about $150. You can buy an AK47 for about $400. Handguns are usually at least $300. A basic pump action shotgun goes for about $250 on the low end.

A good point, but like most things I assume they have a bottom end price, for example getting a working car for less than £50 is a challenge where I am from, so I imagine the same applies to firearms, also the top end of personal firearms, excluding the gold plated diamond encrusted crap must exist, so I was looking for a rough range.

OK. How about, how much is a... Glock 11? Roughly?

Wow. An AK for $400 that is a steal. I had no idea, I assumed they were quite costly things, I imagine Ammo can't be that cheap?

What's a glock 11? :)

Glocks are usually about $500.

Ammo for rifles is between 15 cents per round up to 60 or 70 cents per round if you stay with the "mainstream" cartridges. Ammo for handguns is usually a bit cheaper.

AKs are cheap because most of them are built from military surplus parts that ex Warsaw Pact countries are trying to get rid of.

Yeah that makes sense, That's pretty cool. I wonder what they would cost if legal in the UK, because if I remember rightly shotguns are a lot more expensive.

Roughly Zero Dollars

cuz...

they don't exist

Oh ah heck, here's HAL demonstrating his lack of knowlege on guns, OK no problem, I think schniederguy answered what I was looking for anyway :p

He is probably thinking of the Glock 7, which costs more than he makes in a month. Worth it though, since it is made entirely out of porcelain and can pass through airport metal detectors unnoticed.

I believe you can get AK47's legally in the UK, they just have to have the gas system turned off so they aren't semiautomatic anymore (so you'd pull the charging handle after every shot to chamber a new round).

Aren't all the shotguns in the UK birdguns? And that tends to be richman's sport, thus have to be the expensive kind?

I got my AK about a month ago for $475 since its a somewhat less common variant. Ammo is not expensive at all either, saw cases of 1000 rds at the gun show today for about $180

Glock 7's dont exist.

Glock 17 is the lowest numbering they go.
