i have a .22 handgun (Ruger Mark III). it's a range plinker. It has no rails thus i have to use a barrel mount for the laser.

I want to try a laser sight for fun and see how much of an improvement my aim will be. (I shoot 3" groupings at 25', shotgun like groupings at 50' :( )

For those of you with an aftermarket laser sight, will recoil shake the laser off it's aim?
If so how often do you need to recalibrate the aiming of the laser?

hm.. this laser mount has more surface area to attach to the barrel:

When it's not accurate any more?

for a $13 laser sight, probably after every shot

When you get bored sitting around waiting for someone to rob or rape you. You can use it to play games with your kitty. Or dim the lights and create your own in home laser light show.
Make sure you have Pink Floyd blasting...

Why would you put laser sights on a .22 handgun?

plinking at a target at the range is getting boring. i live in a townhome community, thus cant shoot in my backyard. and there are no woods anywhere.

i moved the target out to 50', but my groupings were like 8"

a laser would add a new novelity to my shooting.
but if i have to recalibrate the laser after every mag or 2, then it's not worth it.

My buddy put a small red dot on his ruger mark 3 for the same reason, just for fun.

The cheap lasers don't hold zero that great, it really depends on what they use to position the laser head itself. I'd recalibrate it each time I went out to the range, as it only takes a couple of minutes to do. Don't expect to be able to see it out to 50 feet though unless you're in dim light.

Honestly, the laser sight isn't going to make you any more accurate. It will just show you how much a tiny movement has such a big effect on accuracy at that distance (if you can even see it). You need to work on your technique and your breathing. 8" at 50' isn't that bad for a handgun shot from a standing position without a rest.

Bought one of these el-cheapo laser pointers, it is garbage. Half the time it doesn't work, it's very hard to zero in, and when you do it loses it after a few magazine's worth of shooting.

Might allow him to be more consistent if he's not aiming exactly the same each time though.

you can use it to see how much you move the gun around when holding it or dry firing.

This. A laser sight can tell you quite a bit about your grip/trigger pull without ever firing a shot. Great dry fire training tool. I have a laser sight on my Walther P22 for just this purpose. When I go shooting with a novice, I can go over some basics before we even get to the range with dry fire exercises.

Can you even see it from 50 feet in daylight?

What recoil? There's not much recoil from a Mark III.
