Anyone carry while on vacation?

I'll be out of town on vacation and was wondering how much hassle it is with the airlines (Delta) to take my sidearm.

I do have a CC permit.

You don't even need a permit to fly - you need to have a locking case which is checked - you obviously can't carry it on the plane.

The airline, of course, has no responsibility outside of their immediate span of control. So you'll also have to check what the regulations are at your destination, as well, to see if there is a reciprocity agreement with the agency/state that issued your carry permit.

Probably wouldn't be an issue but I'd still check Arizona law. I think the biggest hassle will be with the airlines.

I think it can be inside another bag, however you will need to identify contents and also have it inspected. I would recommend a non-TSA lock, notify them that you want a manual inspection with you there so that you can unlock/lock the case. If you use a case with a TSA lock, someone may well steal it.

Check state laws first. The case must be in your checked baggage, you can lock the case (I think it's required). Weapon must be fully unloaded and there's other restrictions on where the ammo can be but it will all be on the airline or TSA website.

Yeah, I will call Delta. I was just looking for some TSA experiences above and beyond the actual rules of the airline.

Arizona does recognize Utah permits.

Fair enough. In that case I think given the heightened paranoia of the TSA of late, just leave it at home. You're far more likely to have problems with the TSA than a problem that means you need a gun.

Don't give info you don't know. no lock is required on the gun itself.
I've flown several times with a firearm and it needs to be unloaded and in a lockable hard sided case. Ammo can be in the case with the firearm but must be in a container of its own, like the factory cardboard box or a plastic box. It can't just be thrown in the case loose.

Declare you are flying with a firearm to the ticket counter person. They will have a TSA person come over and take the bag you have. Together yo uwill check the contents of the locked hard sided case. They will place a inspection tag in the box. you will then close the box, lock it and your luggage and the agent will take your bag and put it on the conveyer and moved out of customers site.
The bag is to never be left unattended behind the ticket counter. IT must be sent behind the "wall" (Where another TSA person can steel it)

You would not be able to take it on the plane anyway...all airlines have their policies on firearm transport posted.

It's a non-event if you do it properly.

The key thing though is more or less the gun laws of where you are going.

Bingo. I never take a gun with sentimental value with me on a plane, because I always expect it to be stolen. Handguns get stolen a lot.

If you properly declare the handgun (as you should..) you can lock your luggage using whatever type of lock you want. It honestly is the best way to take luggage because nobody will be able to get in it without cutting the lock

They'll totally destroy your luggage to get at that handgun. Read on THR or AR15, it happens all the time. Sure, you get paid for your gun, but your gun is now in the hands of a criminal.

Guns should be transported in a hard sided case locked with a lock for which only you have the key, so a TSA lock is a no go.

i flew from az to michigan with my 9mm in baggage. i have the original locking case, had no ammo in mags and had an ammo box in the same bag. the worst ive seen them do is plaster your bag with orange tape that says "FIREARMS" which pissed me off. i havent flown for a few years, but ive done it a few times since 9/11
