A lot of the gun talk on ATOT tends to center around new or lightly used stuff from the bigger names. H&K, Springfield, Glock, ect.

But I tend to have the most fun with stuff that is often both a little more unusual and less expensive. It's usually a combination of a decent supply but not a high demand that yields very cheap prices for stuff that is really quite good.

So what's some stuff you guys think is worth a mention?

I would start with what is probably the most well-known (depending on the name used) gun that I rarely see or hear anything about: The Jericho.

yatyijy6thov7b6fg.jpg

Better known as the 'Baby Eagle.' The cheaper imports usually bear the standard 'Jericho 941' markings, but there are plenty out there with the 'Desert Eagle' stampings. I think the 'lol Desert Eagle 9mm lol' thing might be what puts this pistol under a lot of radars.

With the standard (big, blocky) sights and the addition of nothing but some Hogue grips, as pictured above, the 9mm variant is easily the best pistol I have ever fired. Or am likely ever to fire. It's a CZ-75 that's been dipped in a pool of pure awesome. Made from a composite of what I can only guess is lead and depleted uranium, it is one hefty motherfucker. That coupled with the low bore axis and excellent trigger make it a rapid-fire tack driver. The only thing I've fired that seems as accurate and low-recoil is the Steyr GB (what a strange beast that one is).

Cost for a used one in good working order: $300-400.

Honorable mention: the CZ-52. Or as I like to call it, Comrade Fireball.

Makes the Jericho (or any CZ-75) look like the Ferrari of firearms in comparison. But god it's a fun gun. Nothing super special to note other than a) it shoots massive 7.62 Tokarev fireballs and b) they are stupid cheap. A buddy of mine picked one up at a gun show, made in the mid-50's, still with the original holster and cleaning kit, for $200. $250 is probably a more 'standard' asking price. A nifty 'feature' is the supposed lack of a slide release...but the trigger bar makes an acceptable substitute. I'm sure it's very not-recommended, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that the Ruskies commonly used the same technique.

While I'm on CZ's, the CZ-82 is another great cheap gun. Great size/profile for CC, too. My only issue is the thick double stack grip. Been looking to maybe pick up a cheap Feg PA-63 to try out. Way cheaper than a Walther, even cheaper than a Bersa Thunder, and 9mm Mak > .380.

What kind of stuff has ATOT shot that fits the 'cheaper surplus' category?

What about rifle? Mosin Nagant is good from what I read/heard and it is about $150 each.

I owned a Ruger Vaquero once. Nice shooter, modern internals (firing pin block) and much less expensive than an actual Colt SAA but ultimately not that much fun to shoot because of the horrible sights and slow reloading. I guess if you were into cowboy action shooting it would be a worthy gun but I ended up selling it and buying a surfboard with the money.

I also owned a Beretta clone made by Taurus. It was reliable but another gun I ended up getting rid of eventually. All the handguns I own now are big name manufacturers like Colt, Glock, S&W, Beretta and Para-Ordnance.

It has been probably a decade since I last bought a gun.

Kel-tec pf9 is the bang for buck pistol I would recommend. S&W and Ruger have some cheap alternatives as well, but not as cheap as the pf9.

I have a Bersa .380. It's my ccw and I really like it. It's light, shoots pretty well. I think I got it new on gunbroker for like.. $300 bucks. Only came w 1 mag though, so I bought 3 more.

it's not cheap, but it's my understanding that 'muricans can sometimes get Danish army surplus P210's (m/49 neuhausen). This was our standard issue pistol in the Army, ridiculously accurate and reliable. They're also highly sought after so it's gonna hold its value.

If you're not in California apparently you can get police surplus S&W revolvers for $300 or so.

I would not recommend this gun as a carry gun.

Why not?

I'm looking for a better options for CCW, but I can't make myself spend $700 on something I hope to never use for more than target practice. :(

Sig Sauer P225 / P6. They're essentially the same thing, though the P6 has heavier springs, different markings, and a different hammer.

It's a small full-sized pistol with a single stack 9mm magazine. EXCELLENT guns overall, and they can often be found in the $300-400 range.

Get a M&P Shield. You should be able to find one for just over $400, and it's highly praised as a CCW pistol.

Gotta go with the Ruger LC9 as my favorite budget gun at the moment. They can be found for around $400 and shoot pretty accurate for the size. Makes for a nice carry piece as well.

Best bang for the buck? Hi-Point. AKA the Saturday night special.

It's ugly, reliable, and dirt cheap. Around $100 to $150 to pick one up in 9mm, 40, or 45. It is the best bang for the buck firearm.

SCCY 9mm would be the next suggestion by me. Polymer 9mm single stack conceal carry gun for $200ish. Ugly, reliable, and dirt cheap. Again a great best bang for the buck value handgun.

A surplus military issue zastava tokarev for $150-$200. Another nice military/police issue sturdy reliable. Although the normal ammo is a bit hard to find as a 7.62x25 but the 9mm variants can be found floating around (Thos are usually called the Zastav Yugo I think). As like the others ugly as hell, but it will do the job.

For a cheap rifle one can't beat the Mosin Nagant surplus rifle. $100-$150 price range and a great reliable rifle.

For shotguns it's hard to beat a maverick 88 for $150-$200.

Those would be my best bang for the buck selections.

I would have mentioned the SCCY, but I couldn't stand the trigger on the Gen 2 that I fired out at the range. Messed with my accuracy somewhat, but definitely not bad for the price.

Shields come very highly rated.

Check your local online gun board (or PM me your state and I'll search). You can pick up a used Glock 26 all the time for $400.

I'm picking up a used (looks like new) P226 this weekend for $500. That's half of retail.

There are some good brand name guns for CCW and they are much less than $700 each.

Beretta Nano.
S&W Shield.
Ruger LC9.
Walther PPK.

All those guns above should be less than $500, brand new and not used.

That's what's best for a new gun owner. Surplus guns may be fun for the collector, but I wouldn't recommend one for someone's primary firearm.

I never did see one marked with Jericho at my local gun stores, even at gun shows when I looked it was always Desert Eagle.

You can get the Mosin for under $100 if you look.

People discount Hi-Point pistols, however, most who say they are junk have never seen or held one. If you talk to actual Hi-Point owners, most admit they are NOT the best, but for the price they are an ok weapon for a beginner or one who doesn't shoot all the time.

harder to find for sure

the kel tecs and taurus CCW guns are pretty damn cheap, and not bad guns for the price

generally reliable, but lacking in something, like most cheap guns
