Ok, I won my Winchester 12 gauge 1300 Sporting Field shotgun at a Halloween party in like 2002. Right now I'm wanting to try to trade it for a handgun. I'd really like a 9mm HK or a 9mm SIG.

My question is, do I just take the shotgun to a dealer and tell him I want to make a trade or what??? I never got any paper work or anything when I won the shotgun. I figure I could get a handgun for about $600.

Next question is, does anyone by chance know what this shotgun is worth???

Shotguns aren't regulated the way handguns are, which is why no paperwork. Which is why wal mart even sells them.

You still need to pass the federal background check to purchase a long gun. If it's a private party transfer, you don't need a background check in most states. That's probably what a contest prize is considered.

Your Winchester has an MSRP of $444. I imagine a gun store would give you $250 - 300 in credit for it if it's in excellent condition.

Keep the shotgun and save for the handgun. You won't get half what it's worth on a trade in.

Your best bet is going to be to advertise the shotgun in the papers & try to sell it locally. You'll get alot more for it that way that trading it to a shop.
