So I'm changing the strings on my acoustic (as I snapped the high E while tuning) and I notice a little fret buzzing with the low E. I put a couple other strings on and they all buzz at the third fret. So I'm looking at my poor guitar, and all the sudden out of nowhere the neck is just warped to hell.

So my question is, do I go for adjusting the truss rod myself or take it into a place and have it professionally done. The nut is cracked too, but that just needs some glue and a clamp, I can do that myself. Is adjusting the truss rod hard, and am I likely to break it?

do you have a manual or access to one that will tell you "for sure" which direction, clock wise, counter clock wise, tightens or loosens the truss?

I recommend a carvin.

I dunno, I figure I could probably look it up. I have a Martin DX-1 and that's a pretty common model.

When is the last time that you brought it in to have it setup? Do you do your own maintenance? I think that's where you'd get your answer on what to do. I have yet to learn to setup my guitars and just spent $50 today to have it setup and restrung.

I've never learned to set it up, nor have I ever had this one set up. Its probably almost two years old now, so I know its well overdue. Being at college though its hard to get to a place that will do it, let alone afford it. I can restring, I can fix the nut, I figure I might as well figure out how to adjust the truss rod.

Luthier!! Guitars are too valuable (monetarily and sentimentally) to try a DIY with no knowledge and experience (and I speak as someone with no knowledge or experience in that realm :)).

In a college town there should be at least one music shop with a qualified luthier... check around. A setup costs me $30 including new strings but you may be looking at a more expensive repair. Estimates are usually free though :)

Hope you get it figured out.

i assume you have it all tuned up? the tension of properly tuned strings can make a pretty big difference in the bow of the neck.

Had the same problem with my acoustic. Just take it in, its not an expensive repair or anything. If you've got the interest in learning to do it yourself, ask if you can watch him do it.
