YAGT - What would you pay for a Russian or Chinese SKS?

I'm not really up on market prices of these things, but there are a few at my local gun shop in the $250-$350 range, some with bayonet and scope, some only bayonet. Stuff is in pretty good shape, a little banged up, but shouldn't be anything threatening the functionality... I'm looking for a cheap rifle for shooting at the range for fun (poor college student) 7.62x39 is cheap, and from what I know, the SKS is pretty indestructable. Anyone have any thoughts or input? Does that price sound kinda high to you?

Thanks.

That's WAY high for any type of SKS. And don't bother with the Chinese ones, Yugoslav or Russian made ones are the best.

that's what i was thinking... i've seen ads for really cheap ones <$100 when i buy other ammunition online, but i was thinking that those were really sketchy, and that is why they were so cheap.

what price range would you expect to see them in?

You used to be able to find them from $50-75 about 10 years ago. Now they go for $100-150.
At least the last time I looked.

That price sounds kind of high. You can buy a Ruger Mini-14 brand new for $579 and mount a scope on it. Why not buy one of those instead?

because $350 was pretty much the max i was willing to pay for a gun that is just for fun right now. that's why i'm looking at cheap, reliable guns with cheap ammo. i was thinking more in the $200's or under

You can get a romanian ak47 for about that price.

Definitely too expensive and the wrong country of origin. Look for a Yugo model more in the $150 range. You should be able to find something very nice for that price.

Yugos 99-150
Chinese 150-225
Russan 175-400

All pricing depends on condition.

In your situation I'd buy a shooter grade Yugo.

Where does one find these gems, anyway? My local gunshops tend towards the higher end stuff- their cheapo rack is full of old, old, old stuff that rattles and probably has the accuracy and range of a thrown rock.

Yugo. That is way too much. With the possible exception that it was still in the original crate/packing/grease in never fired condition.

Buying a gun for fun is just stupid.

People who treat guns like play toys should be shot with one.
So, what reasons do you decree acceptable, for a person to buy a gun?

Personally, I like them. If I buy an SKS I may take it into the woods some November (my state pretty much lacks the wide open spaces that would drive me to buy a longer-range gun) but it's basically going to be for shooting cans and such. Practice and fun.

You're assuming people play with guns as a toy, I know many many gun owners, not one of them treats a weapon as a toy, it's that whole "responsible adult thing" you're evidently unfamiliar with.

A gun should only be for self defense.

Just how do you think anyone develops any proficiency at using a gun for self defense? You have to shoot the damn thing and you should shoot it frequently to keep your skills.

so i should pay several hundred dollars on something that i will hopefully never use... not only that, i should:

1) not ever use it to make sure it works

2) not practice with it to make sure i am proficient and able to operate it in a SAFE manner should the need ever arise

what is wrong with going to an established shooting range and shooting paper targets with a rifle?

perhaps i worded my original post incorrectly. i do not intend to treat this gun as a "toy". i already own several, i have taken firearm safety courses and i always treat a gun with the utmost care. i do not intend to use this gun for any purpose other than use at a shooting range. should the need arise, i would likely choose another the items in my closet.

guns are minimally dangerous if treated correctly.

Umberger, that sounds pretty steep for an SKS, I'd wait for a better price or buy something else.

I had one & after I looked at it closely, I sold it to a friend for what I paid for it, $110.
