Looking to get another handgun. It's either going to be a SIG P250 40 S&W or a Sprinfield XD 40 S&W. Both are the compact version and both are $399.

Which one would you get? Pros/cons of each gun?

Springfield XD; i've shot it and I liked it a lot

Ended up getting an H&K USO 40 instead.

I love the S&W 40, but I wish the ammo went on sale; it seems like only 9mm only ever goes on sale

Why do you care what someone else would get? Read reviews on each and check out the guns to see which one 'feels' best for YOU and then decide....I know...it is a novel concept....

not trying to be an ass, but everyone will be telling you what feels good for them and that really won't help you since the most important factor in choosing a gun (at least IMO) is how it feels when YOU grip it...

Just looking for opinions from people who have shot them. I've read reviews on both and like any review you have your fanbois and haters.

Both feel allright when I grip them however Jessica Alba does feels much better.

Why a .40?

It all depends on who your talking to.

Test show that the 40 has more stopping power then the 9mm, but not as much as the 45. So the 40 fills a gap between the low capacity of the 45acp and the high capacity of the 9mm. With the 40, your taking a 185 grain bullet and pushing it to about the same speed as a 9mm 115 grain.

Personally, I do not like the 40, the recoil is too sharp for my taste. Just about ever 40 pistol I have shot, was not a pleasant experience. Give me a good ole 9mm or 45acp any day over a 40.

But my brother on the other hand, who is a deputy sheriff, he shoots a glock 40.

If I was going to buy a new pistol right now, I would look at the new Springfield Armory XD 5.25 Competition Series, that pistol was designed with competition and combat shooting in mind.

It actually has slightly more stopping power than the 9mm, despite what so-called gun enthusiasts would want you to believe.
The issue is: Do you really need 5 percent more power at the cost of one or two rounds?
With today's powder and bullets, the difference is very small. The 9 has less recoil and is cheaper to practice with.

Same. It fills a niche that didn't need filling.

I'd get the S&W M&P9.

Or a Glock 17/19 (only difference is size with the 19 being a slightly smaller frame). Note: I own an M&P9 and am looking to get a Glock 19 soonish.

I'll never understand this infatuation with the XD series. Congratulations on wanting to buy a Croatian or w/e piece of crap re-marketed to the US market after failing so badly the first time around with a nice $100 price bump and a slick marketing campaign.

Of the two the Springfield. I love Sigs but the P250 is a piece of shit.

I carry and shoot .40 because I have to. If I had my choice it would be 357sig with 45ACP and then 9mm. .40 is a decent round but with modern ammunition it only offers a marginal increase in stopping power over 9mm. I would take high end 9mm ammo with the additional capacity over .40. 357sig and 45ACP both over significant stopping power over either with the 357sig having much better capacity. 357sig's biggest downfall is outrageous ammo cost.

I have a 9mm, looking for something different. Not really worried about ammo cost.

If I could find one locally for the same price as the XD or Sig I'd consider the S&W. The only S&W they have on sale is the S&W 410.

Where do you live? Do you have an FFL that will receive from an online seller?

If you live in a free state, you can get one for 439 delivered + whatever your ffl charges.

What about the excessive penetration of the 357 sig?

My brother (sheriff deputy) stopped carrying the 357 sig because it has a good chance of passing through the body and striking a bystander.

He should try Speer Gold Dot, they expand quite nicely.
Am pretty sure they are available in 357 sig now.

I live in a free state. ended up getting the XD 9mm. I got a good deal on it. Great feel, shoots nice and the muzzle flip is minimal. Not much worse than my Beretta.

I can get Speer Gold dot for free from a LEO friend.
