YAGT: What the hell do you wear to the opera?

18to29: Opera for a New Age

The Canadian Opera Company based here in Toronto sells a couple hundred tickets specifically to young adults between the ages of 18 to 29, so I've finally taken the plunge and set a date to go to a showing of Falstaff with someone I've been wanting to go to something snazzy with for a long time. Background provided, I have two questions.

One: As titled, what the hell do you wear to the opera? Google has provided me "whatever you feel comfortable in", which is about as helpful as a female car mechanic. In this day and age how are you expected to dress for one of these performances?

Two: Is the opera somewhere where you can get fairly 'comfortable' with your date? 😱

Well, at least it'll be a new experience. With my luck I'll have an embarassing story or two to tell about it by the time the night's over. 😀

I think you should wear something nice. Not something you want to do in jeans and a tee shirt.

casual. slacks and a sport coat imo.

and even if it were possible (which i doubt), why would you want to "get comfortable" with your date at the opera?? talk about sleazy. 😉

the whole point is to try and impress her with your choice of entertainment, right? dont ruin it by ignoring the performance and trying to get her hands on mr. happy. 😀

I found this on a website.
Evening performances are more formal, generally a suit with a tie for men, and a nice cocktail dress for women. The matinee show is more casual "church" clothes or business casual. Elegant or comfortable, it is up to you.

Thanks. With my choice of companion to this performance I'm sure I will. 🙂

I agree with the above.

Do yourself a favor and read up on the opera your going to.
Know the story line and plot before hand. That way you will be able
enjoy it to the fullest. Tell your date of your research so she is not
constantly asking, "Whats happening?"

I would wear a tuxedo long sleeve t-shirt and black jeans, with white
sox & sneakers. But I'm a clod.......

😉
