YAGT: What firearm would you use in a post nuclear world?

Post-apocalypse, I'd probably want something reliable with really common ammo. A .22 rifle, an AK, any 12ga shotgun, and maybe a 9mm pistol.

Finding guns that share ammo might be a good idea as well. Like a revolver and carbine in .357 or .44 magnum. Ammo isn't as common though.

As others have said, I'd take an AK as my primary/only rifle. Plenty of experience shooting it, it is accurate enough, and ammo is plentiful

When I posted the OP, I was thinking the same thing. I will get some new pics taken this weekend.

If movies are any indication of fact, targets are only going to be larger after nuclear war, so 2MOA at 500 yards is fine!

Depends on what region I am in. US/NATO countries, something chambered in .223. Former comblock countries, something in 7.62x39mm.

A .22 revolver with a 6 inch bbl would def be one choice. Should work forever, can carry a lot of ammo with me, and ammo should be plentiful everywhere. Maybe get one with a .22mag cylinder for flexibility.

A bolt action rifle in a very common caliber like .30-06.

That's a 6.5 grendel AK-74. The ammo isn't "plentiful."

Going by specs on battle rifles, I'd say SCAR-H. It's a decent bit lighter than the FN/FAL.

Sidearm, I'm most familiar with the Beretta M9, so I'd probably want one of those to start.
They're not the lightest of things, though, so I'd probably want to switch out at some point.

I can keep it going, having put 12,000 rounds through mine over the last 30 years or so.
I can carry those 12,000 rounds as well. I don't expect to get into firefights, I just need to shoot something to eat.

6.5 Grendel AKs are pretty sweet, but in this type of scenario there just isn't a need for that. I wouldn't turn down a 6.5 but I dont think i would take it as my only firearm either..

RFB's an 8 lb compact 20 shot .308. Not the lightest or shortest, but very carry-able and capable of relatively long shots (I've heard up to 500 yards) accurately. Plus still legal in most states in case I meet up with an overzealous cop.

I'm pretty sure in the event of nuclear apocalypse, the cops aren't going to be too concerned with enforcing existing gun laws.

Or, if you survived, then it's safe to assume others like you survived. And who would that be, city folks? Doubtful. Folks who have bunkers, weapons and food? Very probable. And, they would think and act just like you. So, no need to shoot them, is there?

What exactly are you defending yourself from? Chances are, the very people you hate will be dead and long gone.

The fear of nuclear "monsters" is all sci-fi Hollywood.

And, you wouldn't want to hunt radioactive animals to eat. I would imagine its best to avoid things that move around (like INTO radioactive areas) and focus on food you know won't hit you with radiation posion.
