I recently picked up a Sig 556ER. I've added a Magul ACS-L stock, different charging handle and a Magpul MOE forgrip. The 556 is accurate and fun to shoot. It has a little less recoil than an AR. The optics came with it. Primary Arms red dot and a no name 3x magnifier. The red dot is ok and holds zero but I'll probably get something better later on. The magnifier isnt all that good.

Pictured with it is my everday carry, a Ruger SR40

I've never been able to get excited about rifles.

Probably a good thing....they are a bit more expensive than handguns :)

Nice score. Ive got that same Primary Arms Micro-Dot mounted on a Saiga 7.62x39 that I converted. Its held zero through about 1500 rounds so far. Definitely not an Aimpoint, but it gets the job done.

The rifle isnt much more than a good handgun, its all the tweaking and tacticool stuff you add. :D I probably wouldnt own a rifle if I wasnt able to walk out the back door and have a place to shoot it.

Actually, no, not that much.

I can get a nice Springfield M1A for the same or slightly less than a fine pistol.

wha?

my m&p9c w/3 mags costs $500.
my ar-15 w/2mags cost $550.
both new.

altho crimson trace laser for the m&p9c costs a pretty penny.
but bushnell red dot for the ar-15 only cost $40 after rebate.

unless the rifles you are talking about are like this:

Never been a fan of the Sig 556 either. I do however like their 516, but since they have been sued for ripping off the design I can't really give them a lot of credit for it either.

$550 for a new AR is extremely cheap and is probably not very good quality.

price completely depends on brand and model. You can get a Savage hunting rifle for about $300 or you can buy one of their target rifles for over $2000.

Brands like Sig and HK are extremely pricey.
