I am hoping that you mean if you hit your attacker with a 45 that there is less likelihood of it going through them with enough stream left over to go much farther and not that it is the preferred round to stop the attacker?
Yes, exactly. What I'm saying is the best defense round isn't going to be the one that obliterates them, it'll be the round that does as much damage as possible without over-penetration, such that you reduce the risk to others.
If we're talking bear defense, then I'd recommend a 3" Sabot Slug in a shotgun run as hot as you can shoot safely, because over penetration isn't the issue and you need the most stopping power you can get.
