Honestly that doesn't seem that odd to me.

If two people have been living together for some time splitting isn't going to be instant. It will take a while to find a new place, move, etc. Depending on leases or other financial arrangements they may not have much of a choice.

If I was still on decent terms with my g/f & we were stuck living together for a while I wouldn't let her sleep on the couch.

In fact, I have had this very discussion with my g/f.
