YAGT: MP5 clone in 9mm or 22lr?

Thinking about picking up a fun at the range gun, and was looking into MP5 clones (Jeeebus is not made of money, so an actual HK gun is way out of the realm of possible).

Debating between 22lr and 9mm variants.

Something like a Umarex 22lr vs a Coharie/MKE type 9mm clone.

22lr has its obvious advantages being about 1/5 of the cost and ammo being dirt cheap. Also avoids the hassle of doing the class 3 transfer forms.

Already have lots of 9mm stockpiled, so that's a plus. Other than the coolness factor, what else does the 9mm have going for it?

Anyone own either of these variants?

22LR for a fun plinking gun like that. I saw a sweet MP5 22LR at a pawn shop in Idaho, it had a silencer on it and was only $500. I was very tempted to get it.

using a different MP5 clone in .22LR I must say it is a real fun plinking gun, I would get that unless you need the 9mm.

I have the umarex, and I really like it. Built a lot better than the GSG-5 mp5 clones as well (I have had both). Mags can be hard to find in stock sometimes, but not horrible.

Here is mine with my Browning buckmark plinker. My mp5 clone also as a tru-glo red/green dot sight on it, using a classic army airsoft mount (fits perfectly on this gun, a GSG-5 mount will not.). There is an official HK/Umarex authorized mount as well, but it is about $99. The airsoft one does the same thing and holds a zero just fine for $29.99.

I've heard good things about the GSG-9 and for $299 you can't go wrong. If you want a 9mm though, I don't think a MP5 clone at >$1000 is a good deal by any means. For that kind of money you could get a PS-90. I'd just get a 9mm AR15 or a Beretta Storm instead.

Weren't you bragging a few weeks ago about how much money you made?

Forget the clones, get a real H&K SP89. If you can find one, they are only around $5k.

I bought my SP89 back around 1992 when they were $1,200. My ex-wife kept it in the divorce, along with the Colt AR and the AK.

Not as far as I recall, but if your disdain for me is that strong, I invite you to sift through my prior posts and prove me wrong.

That said, If I had $5000 burning a hole in my wallet, the money would go to my kids and/or renovations to the house long before it went to buying a gun.

Don't MP5s shoot 9mm anyway? IMO that'd be the most realistic, but obviously limited to semi-auto.

That said, it's a lot more entertaining to go plinking without worrying about ammo costs. That's why my Buckmark is my most used hand gun. I say go 22 and blast away 500+ rounds for 20 bucks.

I decided to ignore your budget restraints and recommend you to get a UMP and do a USC conversion to 9mm.

Realistically, I say get the 22. Its hit and miss for the centerfire mp5 replica's around $1k. 22 is a great round to stockpile.

lol pay no attention to TH, he is the biggest troll around here. I doubt he's ever even seen a gun in person before.

No trolling,

If the OP wants a 22, why spend several hundred dollars? You can get a ruger 10/22 for around $200.

Maybe he wants a tactical looking rifle for some reason? I would like to have an MP5 clone in 22 long rifle, but what practical application do they serve?

Get a 10/22, slap a 30 round magazine on it, and you will better off then spending $500, $600+ on a fancy looking 22 rifle.

Because the op wants a MP5 lookalike? Duh.

I love my 22lr rifles and hand guns. Cheaper, zero muzzle flip, super accurate, longer range

The only downside is I think 22lr ammo is dirty. They leave more residue than 9mm. And since I shoot them tons more than my other guns, they seem to get dirtier quicker. But I take a bore snake through after about 500 rounds at the range

Get the PS-90 and start a piracy hobby. A white dude on a jet ski would arouse very little suspicion. Take a boat of a beach that is somewhat close to you. Then go south for a bit and pick off another one. Use those two jobs to finance travel to the northeast and plans for a much bigger job. When you hit that, move on to the Mediterranean. If you make it that far, then move on to the black sea and hit a caviar smuggler. That shit is worth much more than gold. Bring it back to Florida and wholesale that shit to stores around the southeast. You'll retire a millionaire.

Remember, don't raid a second time in the same area. Always be on the move.

The bulk pack stuff is dirty, but that's true of any ammo. Buy some nice CCI 22 rounds and they aren't as bad.

a 9mm MP5 clone is going to cost over $1000 most likely.

a .22 MP5 clone is going to run about $300-400

My vote would be for the 22LR version.

Ammo is cheaper. If all you're doing is target shooting and plinking for fun. It's the most economical way to go.
