YAGT: Meaning of flowers and this girl I like

There is this girl I work with that I'm interested in and sweetest day is coming up. Well, I never really said anything to show that I'm interested except simple small talk and a little conversation (no flirting yet), however she asked me to get her something for sweetest day, specifically a long-stem white rose without thorns. She also asked me if I'd be around on the day before sweetest day (she doesn't work on sweetest day so I wouldn't see her that day). She didn't say why. Does it mean anything when someone asks for something so specific? I've heard from another co-worker that she may be an admirer of mine, but as far as I knew, she had a boyfriend. Anyway, this sounds like high school drama, but the main point is that I can't risk misinterpreting any signals because we work together and I don't really want it to be weird if I do take it the wrong way. I figure I could just wait till the day before sweetest day and things will probably become a little clearer, but I'm just wanted to see if anyone had any insight for me on the situation.

Please no flames or insults, I'm just a nice guy who wants a little advice (even if it is from Anandtechies).

<--- points to sig.

But...if you work with her...I'd say no flowers or anything. Sweetest day would be for a s.o. or your mom. Work and romance do NOT mix.

I wonder, too. Curious that she would ask for something so specific from you; ruins its meaning, imho.

And I agree that this whole thing does sound like high school drama.

For what it's worth, I believe a white rose symbolizes friendship. You might want to double check on that though. If that is the case, she asked you for a white rose, you're interested in her, so you should give her a white rose. If she wants to pursue a relationship with you, great. If not, then as a friend, you gave her exactly what she asked for.

yeah, i figured i had no chance to make anything out of this. I've been avoiding the situation since I do work with her...but i really do like her. I won't quit my job for any girl, but it just sucks to be in a situation like this. For all I know, it's just a friendly gesture with no meaning behind it. Besides, girls come and go...there will be another one down the road.

So I guess most people's advice is to ignore it and no flower?

:(

anyways I think she likes you too...if she said a bracelet or necklace for sweetest day then I'd say she was abusing. However I do believe white roses without thorns do not mean love.

well, if i did get her anything at all, it would most definitely be the exact thing she asked for...a long-stem white rose without thorns. I would guess that a white rose means friendship as well (or more specifically purity, innocence, etc.). Also, from what I have found, a thornless rose means "early attachment" or "love at first sight." Maybe it means that she thought I was a cool person and would be a good friend from the first time I met her. However, my more realistic side tells me that most people don't know what roses really mean (except red roses) and there may be nothing at all behind it, just a request for a nice flower. The only thing that gets me about it is the specific request. Maybe it's a hint that she just wants to be friends (though as I said, I've never really shown that I'm interested in her).

Sweetest day is a holiday that is on the third saturday of October. I think it was originally started to shown a kind gesture to orphans that someone really cared about them. It has since evolved to be a kind-of second Valentine's Day.

That could very well be the case. I thought I remembered one of my (girl) friends telling me that, but I may have misheard since I wasn't paying close attention.

thanks guys, i really appreciate the comments. :)

maybe I'll have to wait till Friday to find out how things go, but I kind of have to decide whether or not to get her the rose. (sounds like I shouldn't)

A stupid scam invented by Hallmark. It exist when we were gowing up, then suddenly there was a bunch of marketing for it and now it's a flower and card buying day.

BTW: This rose color thing is way more complicated than I ever imagined: http://www.123roses.ca/colors.html . I hope this helps but it will likely just confuse you. It is a better sign than if white meant friendship though.

So, what country are you from that celebrates this?

Just because some people are married, or have a bf, doesn't mean they don't cheat. :disgust:

It's been listed on calendars here in the States for years. Sometimes it falls on my b-day.
