The average income here is $30k per person (not household), I'm at $62k and likely will be at high 60's in Feb.

I like to pat myself on the back sometimes and this results in an obvious sign of wealth in a poorer community.

i make 100k and i only recently spent 2k couch, a 45" plasma and a XPS computer i bought for cheap. other than that i have nothing you listed. with the mortgage and everything i spend the rest and either put into savings or invest into stocks. i have no other way of showing it

in NJ, buying a house there is a bitch i heard. i dont like rent, throwing away money, you dont get a penny back. its not smart spending. i still cant understand why one of my high school friend who moved to new hampshire is RENTING... god.

I know where you're coming from, though places in the city are super inflated. I can't do Long Island either, just because the commute is a bitch (I work on wall st.)

it's cheaper for me to rent compared to buying.
my rent is $640/mo including all utilities.

if I bought a house, maintenance, utilities, interest on mortgage, taxes, etc. all far exceed the rental costs. All those items are sunk costs and are before you invest in the home equity; and to be quite honest, i don't need a mortgage to force my savings.

actually i do think thats high for out of college, but no, i agree there is no money effect for the OP I don't believe. most gold diggers aim for the rich investment bankers, celebrities, and sport superstars, and if he's in a relatively poor community, the real gold diggers probably all moved out.

Starting salary out of college here is $35-40k here...again, money goes a long way up here.

If you had good reading conprehension you would see the women i date are NOT college educated. The income difference is significant.

My wife was from a very low income area, and grew up in a single (low)income household. Her first job out of college pays a considerable amount more than you make.

If anything, her upbringing makes her value money even more and she is more frugal with it than somebody that grew up in a home where money was readily available.

I'd agree with this as well. My fiance is good about making me return products if they are bad or clothes if they don't fit. Used to I couldn't be bothered, and I wasted a ton of money. We also cook more and spend less money on going "out" and things of that nature. She's WAYYYYY more frugal than me, so it is helping to effect a positive change on me.

My fiance's family is middle class where she comes from, but in the United States not so much. Back home she's got a comfortable existence -- she just doesn't have excess money laying a round. The income gap between us is massive, but we've never really even discussed it. I see no reason to.

Someone said it isn't an issue unless you make it one. I agree with that entirely. There's no reason to hide or not hide something. Just be yourself. If someone is a golddigger you should be able to see it a mile away.

I've used cost of living and salary calculators and a $62k wage here is worth $80k in Texas major cities and higher in places like LA, NY.

I have a friend who just signed up with a company in LA for $80k and he's not banking anything. Pretty damn sad if you ask me.

Honestly unless you work in research or s&t and have access to large pool of financial data (bloomberg, factivate etc) you're stabbing in the dark no matter what you do.

Nope. For about 3 years there I thought I was a genious. LOL. After the market crashed, I was in denial for another 2 years and tried to make it back. Lived off my savings and investments. I finally gave in and realized the go-go era would never return and took most of my remaining savings and bought a restaurant and actually worked for the first time in about 5 years. Sold that and now own a contracting business involved in existing construction.

I still swing trade but most of my money is now tied up in low beta relatively safe stocks. I'm now making my money the old fashioned way. The market is no longer the main source of my income.

I put in $50K Boston and it bloomed into $180K for NYC.
