in general, how sore should you be after a good workout (24 hours later)?

int he very beginning when i started lifting, i was sore as hell....but later on, there was only mild soreness later. sometimes, i wouldn't be sore at all, and i assumed i didn't work hard enough the day before.

No, that's pretty common. It's ok to have a little soreness for the next couple of days but the more you workout the more your body is gets used to that kind of intensity. Even as you get stronger and able to lift more you won't be as sore as you were when you first started. I remember when I first started, I did triceps....couldn't put my hands on the back of my head for nearly a week. haha.

although i just love several days of post-squat non-stop OMG my quads/hamstrings are killing me soreness,
adequate sleep & Excedrin/Tylenol are your friends.

Actually from what I've always learned/read hot showers are a big no-no. The hot temperature loosens the muscles and the lactic acid has a field day. Swimming right afterwards in cooler temperature water helps heal up the microtears in the muscles. I would say fora bout 20-30 min. Helps with pain and helps you heal up faster.
