Indy 4 Like Phantom Menace?
Lucas, Spielberg and Ford talk sequel.
by Stax
August 21, 2006 - Director Steven Spielberg, creator-producer George Lucas and star Harrison Ford have all admitted that the biggest delay in getting Indiana Jones IV before cameras has been juggling their schedules.

But Lucas has now revealed that fans' expectations and story points have also played a role in the slow return of the globe-trotting archaeologist to the big-screen.

"I discovered a McGuffin," Lucas informed Empire Magazine, referring to the old Hitchcockian plot device about something that is only truly relevant because all the characters are after it and thus it advances the plot.

"I told the guys about it and they were a little dubious about it, but it's the best one we've ever found? Unfortunately, it was a little too 'connected' for the others. They were afraid of what the critics would think. They said, 'Can't we do it with a different McGuffin? Can't we do this?' and I said 'No'. So we pottered around with that for a couple of years. And then Harrison really wanted to do it and Steve said, 'Okay'. I said, 'We'll have to go back to that original MacGuffin and take out the offending parts of it and we'll still use that area of the supernatural do deal with it'."

Lucas also addressed the overwhelming anticipation that Indiana Jones IV has to live up to. "We're basically going to do The Phantom Menace. ... People's expectations are way higher than you can deliver. You could just get killed for the whole thing? We would do it for fun and just take the hit with the critics and the fans...But nobody wants to get into it unless they are really happy with it."

Indiana Jones is tentatively slated to start filming in mid-2007 for a 2008 release.

For far more of what Lucas, Spielberg and Ford had to say, check out the latest issue of Empire Magazine.

I think that Spielberg may be the only hope for Indy IV.

All hes saying there is that noone can possibly live up to the expectations we have.. hes not saying it will be a bad movie.. but hes saying that the same thing happened to EP1
we built up our expectations so high for another ep4.. that we hated ep1 in comparison.

now after seeing all the prequels we realize that as slow as ep1 was it was neccesary to make the story work in ep3..
but even now it is still the least fave star wars due to the disapointment people had after the hype buildup.

While some of that is likely true, EP1 still sucks ass compared to the rest of the SW movies. There were only a few decent parts (like the fight at the end for example). I have far less complaints about 2 and 3, though I admit to some issues there as well. Lucas has also been dicking around with the original movies far too much. Only this year are we to receive the films in their original cuts on DVD, minus the color enhancements or digital sound that people actually would want done.

See again Ep1 was a neccesary evil it told key pieces of the story... it was slower than the rest of the movies and Lucas knew this.. this is why he started with ep4 when he made the originals.. becasue he knew people wouldnt bite with ep1 and then history would be alot different for scifi..

for the record I prefer the newer versions over the old crusty ones... the new cgi rocks over the old tech.
and I saw all the originals in the theaters and was(is) a huge fan..

Gosh darn revisionist history! 😛

Seriously, I'm not getting worked up or anything, but the parts I hated most were Jar Jar and the 5-6 year old Anakin piloting some crazy jet fighter & managing to be the hero in the middle of of a huge space battle.

Neither of those aspects were crucial to the story (Jar Jar in particular). And obviously, you want to have scenes that show the kid has potential, but a space-fighting hero?

Forgive my opinion, but that's why I think Episode I was lousy.

There was too much evil and not all of it neccesary.

Well, I liked Ep 1 more than Ep 2 and Ep 3, but I don't really care for any of them.

I find the Macguffin story more disturbing. It's clear lucas wanted to use something that would offend a huge number of people. Lucas seems to be totally out of touch with the public. It was bad enough when he used obvious racial stereotypes in Ep 1-3. My guess is that he wanted to use some artifact from the muslim religion and have crazed muslims hijacking planes and using suicide bombs on indy.

Harrison Ford is like 80! Anyone who thought IJ4 would be even remotely good is on crack.

He's 54 and probably in better shape than you'll ever be.

I think what is meant by this is that Indiana is going to have a sidekick.... like Jar Jar Binks.

My my, someone's getting touchy in their golden years.

😛

Harrison Ford is starting to look pretty old. And not the good "experienced" kind of old either. He's not in horrible shape, but he's not in the fantastic shape that indy really needs to be. They should have done indy 5 years ago.
