I've decided to jump on the exercise bandwagon, so I'm going to try and start running in the mornings.
I live in the middle of nowhere pretty much, with lots of fields and stuff nearby, and one windy country lane.
Would I be better to run on fields (which will be softer) or on the road?

I would assume it'd be better to run through fields because it'll be less impact as I run, right?

Oh, and if I'm running in the morning, should I eat before or after I've run? Or both?

just gotta be careful in fields, roads you can see holes and such, fields can have small divets (sp?) and the chance to roll your ankle or something is alot greater
 
Roads arent that bad. Concrete is bad. I wouldnt run in a field in fear that I would hurt myself by something unseen.
 
I prefer running on roads, you may get shin splints at first, but its alot easier to record your mileage. However, if you're just trying to get in shape, it doesnt really matter where you run as long as you're putting the miles in.

Edit: as far as eating, if you plan on running in the morning, eat a big meal for dinner the night before, and when you wake up stretch and run.
 
between the track (not dirt; kinda like hard rubber, recycled tires they say) and grassy field, i always try to stick to the track because whenever i have to go the field to avoid a crowd, i usually hit a bump or a small depression or some pine cone and my ankle goes all whacked.
 
If you have a beach nearby, run in the sand. It's a lot harder than regular surfaces but d@mn it'll get you in shape.
