YAG(ym)T: Questions from a gym noob.

Xyclone

Lifer
I'm thinking about joining a gym this week. I have an LA Fitness right next to my house, a Bally's about 2 miles away, a 24 hour fitness 6 miles away, and a few other gyms near my house.

For LA Fitness, what would be a good price to jump on? I called and they're offering $130 registration fee and $29/month, with no contracts. Is this worth it? Any better choices?

Thanks! 🙂

Buy a bench and some dumbbells, FTW.

Too expensive for all the equipment. Dumbells will only hit certain muscles, and aren't that good for cardio. I have a pair that I've been using about 3 years now.

unless the Bally's is significantly better or cheaper go with LA Fitness. imo gym proximity is important.

I was thinking the same thing about the prox. Do you think the price in the OP is a good deal? Thanks.

Probably because most people drop out fairly quickly so they need to milk you as quickly as possible? That's my guess.

Find the gym that is the closest to you with the least amount of douchebags. It's better to drive a little further to avoid jackasses. But then again, it might get you pumped to lift heavier.

While I'm not denying that a full gym is much better, a good(complete) set of dumbbells and a single, adjustable bench can hit almost every muscle group to an extent.

That being said, go with whatever is closest.

Check them all out, especially during the time you'd think you'd most likely to be working out yourself, to see how crowded it is.

I wish more gyms had pools. There are only like two choices for me in my entire city because I like to swim as well as work out. ;/

I Joined LA Fitness 9 months ago - 75 registration fee /35 a month and you had to pay the last month up front. I was told it was a weekend special and that it wouldn't be repeated.
I know 4 people that have joined since then, they were all offered the same "special, limited time deal" What you have to understand is that even though there is no contract, you have to give 2 full months notice to stop, and they already have your last months payment, so if you have to stop, or want to switch gyms, you are locked in for two additional months from when you give your written notice. They will also try to get you to put your membership on hold for about $10 a month, so you can avoid the registration fee if you decide to come back.
That all being said, I never used a gym before and I have found that I enjoy it. Waking up early and working out, makes my whole day go better. This coming from someone who used to get up at the last possible minute and rush to work .

BINGO!!!

Also, evaluate your goals and pick the one that has the best equipment to meet those goals.

Not the prettiest, or coolest looking equipment, but the most fuctional.

I know you SEE lots of pretty equipment on your tour, but you need to know it all works. Get on random cardio and weight machines and try them out just enough to know they fuction properly.

Finally, check out how organized and clean they are. Nothing is more frustrating than having to search for weights or dumbbells all the time. Also make sure all the dumbbells and pre-loaded curl bars are properly marked with the weights.

I went to a 24hour (or was it LA fitness?) in LA and most of the dumbbells and ALL the preloaded curl bars had no numbers on them. The stickers had fallen off.

Dumbell squats, Dumbell lunges, dumbell rear lunges. That's just a start.

My home bench can be adjusted for barbell squats. It also has a lat attachment, leg curl attachment, and preacher curl attachment. I got the bench plus full set of weights for $100 at a garage sale. The benefit of immediate access to weights cannot be overstated. No excuses for not "going to the gym", no drive time, no waiting at the gym, no "working in", no annoying music, no ego trip, no distractions. These distractions don't become apparent until you have worked out alone, in the dead of night. Well, there's also no one to spot you, no cute girls, and less variety. But if you know your limits and are not there to socialize, home gym is a viable option.

For $100 I can do: squats, deadlift, lunges, incline/decline/flat bench, pulldowns, barbell row, leg extension, leg curls, barbell curl, preacher curl, close grip bench, french press, cable pushdowns, military press, upright row. Pretty good variety already, before dumbbells.

I used to have a LA fitness monthly membership. It was $30 per month, and first/last month down payment. No registration fee. My opinion is that any month-to-month membership is always much too expensive. If you are absolutely sure this is what you want, any long term contract will be most likely cheaper. You can probably get a 3 year membership at 24 hours fitness for less than $800, possibly even closer to $700 depending on your negotiating skills. That's less than $29 per month, and no registration fee. Plus after 3 years, the annual renewal fee is trivial in comparison (less than $100).

ymca ftw?

From what I've seen, YMCA can be pricey.

I'll tell you one thing though about Bally's ...

If my membership was not so cheap at Bally's, I would definitely not be a member there. It's always super crowded after work (but then again most gyms probably are), they only have 1 set of most dumbells over 45lbs, and not many people clean up after themselves at Bally's. It can vary by the bally's you go to (I have about 4 in proximity to me that I've been to, but I mainly go to the same one).

One good thing about Bally's however is the eye candy - there are A LOT of hot chicks there. If you go to Golds Gym or whatever, you won't see many hot women there. I'm not sure bout LA Fitness though.

But as I said my membership at Bally's is cheap. Last year I paid like $138 for the year. I just renewed my membership and I payed $156 for a whole year, and actually signed up a friend at the same time for $199 for a full year. Those prices are not that bad at all, which as I said, is the reason I go to bally's. You can't beat $13/month.
