Been playing long enough on the old one that I finally broke down and bought a new Epiphone '56 Goldtop:

P90's are heaven and hell all in one. Definitely not something you would play metal on but great for blues and rock which is what I play.

Afraid to take the stickers off 🙂

how are the epis these days?

I have a '58 style sunburst from about 10 years ago, then they started making them pretty crappy for a while, but last time I picked one up in a store it seemed like the quality had improved again.

It sure looks good in the pics!

Much better than they used to. Grover tuners, better electronics. The bodies are top notch but mahogany body with alder top (Gibsons have maple tops). The pickups in the other Epiphones pretty much suck but the P90s in this one are supposedly really good. Sound great to me.

Nice - my only complaint about mine is the rather ordinary pickups, but they seemed to go through a pretty serious quality downgrade in the late 90s (bought mine in '95 I think).

Seeing your makes me want to go shopping... dangerous cause the store is a 3 minute walk from here!

I am jealous. 😱 I am still using an Epiphone Les Paul. Meh, works fine for now. I am waiting till I start my band before getting a new guitar. 🙂

I'm actually thinking about picking up one of them new Epi valve amps. Dirt freakin cheap at $200 or so. Played a few of them the other day at GC and they aren't bad at all.

10W is like $150. Pretty no-frills but that's insane for Class A, all tube amp. People recommend swapping the stock tubes out for the JJ/Tesla ECC 83 S and the 6L6 GC from the get-go. When I get a house I am buying one on day one.

I use JJ's and they are probably the best bet for new tubes. They improved the tone of my Marshall, though you won't notice unless you're a tone freak.

I was going to ask how the pickups are. Are they real P-90's or Epi knockoffs (I doubt their real). I was never a fan of the P90 due to how "hot" they are. They'll buzz like crazy if you put any sort of gain on them. I was supposed to get my '58 LP Repro this year, but we bought a house instead. Then the wife hit me with "If you can start playing enough to earn $100/month, you can get it". Ugh...I don't even have a band anymore :|

People have swapped them out for Seymour Duncans, etc. Still they are above average for Epiphone stock. Not horrible like their humbuckers.

The P90 sound is worth the buzz IMO. They're not for playing metal, that's for sure. Under normal gain to OD and light disto there's not much noise. You can also wire them RWRP so you get the humbucking effect in the middle position. The sound they make is nothing short of amazing. I got my Seymour Jazz/JB combo on the other guitar for really heavy stuff.
