YAFUMC thread - the snow can go away now. And I need help ID'ing the piece of it that's bent now. Pic!

Yet-another-f'd-up-my-car thread.
Driving slowly along a snowy road (plowed, but not completely), probably less than 20mph, then I see ahead, the road is starting to drift shut - the opposing lane is sealed up, with my lane starting to close. I tried to slow down a bit, tapping the brakes. I realized that "hmm, car is not slowing down, wheels are locking up" and I tried steering into the drift a bit, but the car went right instead - it went into the thick plowed snow by the side of the road. Started digging. 20 minutes later, my shovel broke apart; 5 minutes later, someone in a pickup drives up, with a chain.
I apparently hooked the chain onto the wrong thing - now the back tire faces to the left about 2 degrees. So yes, I know, I'm stupid. And I don't think I should say this either, but I discovered later that, I have a towing hook on the back of the car too. Never had to use it before though, so I didn't know it was there. And I know little enough about cars that I wouldn't have thought to look for it. The guy had to yank the car out, and drag it about 40-50 feet before I could finally move on my own (once it actually made it back onto the road), and turn around.
So flame on there.

- Now the IDing part:
What is bent is a horizontal, but angled piece, on cross-section, it probably looks something like a horseshoe. Apparently it's a wheel support of some kind (oops). Any idea what it's "technical" name is, or what I should look for in spare parts catalogs for a pricing idea?
The car is a 1997 Hyundai Elantra GLS.

Pic of the thing, taken from the back of the car - the crossbar is circled; on the bottom of it, near the left, you can see the notches left by the chain; that entire area around the notch is bowed backward (toward you in the pic), due to the sheer force exerted on it. The tire in the pic is of course the one that's misaligned, facing to the left slightly; it's the rear left tire.
Pic taken with a Kodak DC3200.

umm you had problems with aligment and camber before that, just look how the thread on your tire is worn out on the inside. Your control arms gotta be outta whack for good, you should get it aligned by professionals (they have comptuers for that)

Unless the outside tread is also worn, then it could have been caused by chronic under-inflation (or for all we know, they could have been rotated from the front). Definitely need to replace that lower arm, though. Then with an alignment you should be back on the road. Good luck!

Lower control arm, thank you.

Yeah, now that you mention it, those tires are kind of wearing thin. I do believe those tires were rotated when I had the oil changed last. I can probably get my tires at Walmart - they seem to have decent prices, and I get a discount because I work there. But I'll see what kind of a deal I can get on tires when I get the thing fixed.
Is this control arm a specialized thing, like most of the things in the car would be I'd imagine, or is it a more "common" part that a place might have a chance of having in stock?

I'll probably need the thing towed for repairs.
Too bad I don't have a cellphone. I probably could have called AAA for help. I was kind of lost with this - I've been driving almost 4 years now, and this is the first time I needed to get pulled out of anything; never had trouble with the car before.

Nuts, and I was supposed to get to an optometrist sometime soon - yesterday, before bed, I kind of rested a leg on my glasses after a shower and crushed them lightly, so they're "misaligned" too. Hasn't been a good 24 hours here.

Call a couple of junkyards. That part is basically one solid piece of stamped steel...no need to be too picky about it as long as it's straight. Chances are, they'll have one or be able to locate one for you at a fraction of what you'd pay for it new. As a new part, it's probably dealer only and that = big money. Then take it to a local shop and tell them you'll pay $100 and buy 2 new tires if they'll swap it out and align it.
