YAFT (yet another fitness thread): Pounding headache while lifting

Ok so I've been lifting 1-3 times a week for the past 6-8 months but the last 3 times I've lifted, I start out doing some bicep curls and within a few reps to a set I get a pounding headache. It just throbs madly and hell today I had to stop lifting for a couple minutes cause it was so bad. And I'm a person who doesn't get much headaches, and rarely do I get one even close to this kind of intensity. It was really bad today. I still have a headache now, 15 min after finishing but it is tolerable now. It was BAAAD when it started.

WTF? Anyone ever have this?

I thought that during exercise pain-killing chemicals are released in the brain, er they attach to the receptors in the brain. I don't see why I'd get a headache then...

i have no answer for you, but i do have a similar question

whenever i play basketball, when i finish, i get a headache like 10 minutes after i stop. Is this some sort of dehydration symptom or something?

Go see a doctor. I've never really heard of that happening before. Are you getting enough rest? Enough protein/carbs? More importantly, are you hydrated properly?

I get 9-10 hours of sleep a day usually 🙂, prolly enough protein given the meat americans tend to eat. And yeah I always have a glass of water when I lift and plus it has happened right away when I started within the first set or two.

Go to the doctor immediately if this persists!!

I had the same thing happen to me this past January. Working out resulted in massive headaches. At first I thought nothing of it, and popped a few Advils. Then I started getting headaches doing simple things, like leaning down to stretch or tie my shoes.

I finally went to the doctor and found out I had very high blood pressure (165/115). I was told I was lucky, as the symptoms I had were due to blood rushing to my head whenever I exerted myself. I was told untreated, this could have eventually resulted in a brain aneurysm. My new medication does the trick for me now as my blood pressure is now regulated.

Please, GO SEE A DOCTOR, better safe than sorry.

Yeah, go see a doctor...even the possibility of high blood pressure is pretty serious.

Also, do you breathe properly while lifting, or do you tend to hold your breath while exerting?

Exactly what I was thinking... You need to have a rythm when you are lifting, without it, headaches will occur is your body is not recieving enough oxygen.

Great post.

Great post indeed.

Another thing is do you eat 60-90min before you go lifting?

One glass of water isn't enough in a work out. Have a litre or so. Don't down the whole thing in one go. Sip it at the end of every set or two. Breath properly also. Breath as naturally as you can.

But it sounds more serious by the way of things and the stuff in quotes will you a lot of hassle. GO see a DR!

Koing

Drinking during your workout doesn't do much. You need to have the water in you before hand. Around a gallon a day, if you are lifting 3 days a week. So before your workout, you should already have a lot of water in you. (looks like you workout after 4pm)

Water fixes a LOT of things...

Ok. Well I will make sure to be very well hydrated and breathe right the next time I do it. If the headache still happens that time then it prolly is my blood pressure. 🙁

It's just weird that the hundred times I've lifted before these past few times I NEVER got a headache. And I don't do a whole lot of physical activity but I have been skateboarding and swimming in the past weeks and never have I ever gotten a headache from exertion.
