ie. Sorry for your lost and sign my name and shove some cash in there ? or something else ?
 
Something simple is best. If you can briefly mention something specific about your memories of the deceased, that's good.

My sincere condolences on John's passing. I will always remember his quick smile, and his friendship meant a great deal to me. You will be in my thoughts.

No cash in the card, but if people are taking up a collection you can contribute to that.
