YAFST: Yet Another File Sharing Thread

once upon a time, I had file sharing setup perfectly on my desktop. then I reformatted and haven't been able to get it back. heh.

there are 4 computers on my home network -- my desktop (XP-Pro), my laptop (XP-Home), my roommate's desktop (XP-Pro), and our HTPC (XP-home).

there are a couple folders on my desktop that I want shared, but I'd like anyone trying to access them to be required to enter in a username/password in order to gain read access(this is mostly for sharing personal files between my desktop and laptop).

on my HTPC, I want the directory where I'm encoding television shows to be openly shared (no password) so that if my roommate or I is watching tv and the other wants to watch a show already stored, he can do so on his own computer.

the HTPC share should be fairly easy (it's not actually put together yet, but it'll be online in the next day or two). I haven't figured out how to setup my desktop to share files but also prompt for a password, though.

Create a local account on the machine which will be sharing the desktop files. Then give that local account read permissions on the share and read ntfs permissions. Remove Domain users, Everyone or Anonymous users from accessing the share. When users connect to the share from the network, they will have to use the username/password of the account you created.
