YAFMT: In the Market for a Memory Foam Mattress

DigDug

Hey all,

I'm in the market for replacing my bed. I want to finally go the route of memory foam, however, after scouring ebay and the like I've found that there is enough jargon and technical specs to rival the purchase of computer equipment. Various weight amounts of the foam, ILD levels, and even variations on how the bed is made (apparently its not one, solid piece of foam, but layers).

I remember there being a thread around discussion all this and providing guidance on the gimmicks and trickey in this market, but I can't find it (maybe it was on another forum?).

In any case, would someone be able to provide some advice or point me in the right direction? I don't want to shell out that much money, only to have been ripped off on price and/or quality.

As always, thanks so much for your help.

I bought a "MEMORY FOAM 5.3lb density" mattress from this place on Ebay and it's every bit as good as a real Tempurpedic. They also throw in two really really good pillows.

Bought a 3" King "memory foam" mattress pad off Overstock for $135 about a year ago. Dude it changed my life!! Not a back ache since......
Before that I could hardly get out of bed in the morning.

Memory Foam?

Why?

In my experience they are three times the price of an innerspring, and not necessarily more comfortable than a well made pillowtop that includes visco elastic foam (memory foam).

Can you elaborate?

I used to sell mattresses.

You had the solid foam ones for $3000.

Then you had the innerspring ones, with tons of fluffy pillowtopness on top, and for the top layer of foam they would use visco elastic memory foam.

I thought the innnerspring ones were more comfortable, and they were certainly much cheaper.

I have a nice Sealy mattress with a memory foam topper, and it's awesome. I've slept on a memory foam before and it wasn't much better that my setup to me.

Thanks guys. I ended up purchasing a Sensus 5lb, 3" topper from Sleepwarehouse.com - they were just named as the best overall topper by the Wall Street Journal about a month ago. There's a 10% discount currently going on too!
