Living with friends can be complicated. We know this. But the proverbial shit has officially hit the fan over here. I live with 3 other people, all good friends. Let's call them Hubert, Jimmy and Kim. Jim has been in a long term relationship with his girl, Sally, for a couple of years.

Well, over the last couple of months their relationship has been a bit rocky. Over the last couple of weeks it has become apparent that Hubert has been making a move on Sally, which obviously annoys Jimmy to no end. In the past couple of days it has emerged that Hubert has been sleeping with Sally. Jimmy flipped, big time.

He rampaged through the house, breaking a stereo, smashing a window and he snapped his phone in half in a fit of rage. He then suddenly up and left on a flight to Auckland, ~900km away. He is now refusing to pay his rent and bills and has left us completely farked. Hubert is afraid to come home in case Jimmy comes back because he has promised to beat the ever-living shit out of Hubert.

There are many details I'm skipping here because I just want to rant. The frustrating thing is that Kim and I are innocent bystanders being affected by all of this crap. I barely have enough money to eat and he has left a bunch of bills unpaid. AAaaaarrrgg. Sorry about the unstructured and probably uninteresting rant, needed to get it off my chest.

Don't you think this should be in the L&R forum GodlessAstronomer?

No, it's a rant about my flatmates and my crappy situation. You can move it if you like but my issue isn't their little love triangle, it's the stress that I don't need with 3 exams in the next 1.5 weeks.

Okay, I'll leave it here for the time being, but let's keep the thread on track about your unfortunate situation and not your roommates love triangle GodlessAstronomer.

Just because the post contains discussion of relationships, doesn't mean that's the point being conveyed. I'd say it's a critical part of the overall story.

Think of it as a long story involving, at some point, my car breaking down due to a cracked rad; would you venture to say it belongs in the garage?

But hey, I'm not a mod.

Sorry to heat about your situation, GA. It tends to happen when roommates get involved. I'm sure it'll work out eventually, you might just find yourself with a couple new roommates.

<-- no roommates = awesome.

It's a bit pricier, but definitely worth it.

I don't know which I would prefer. This year has been some of the most fun I've ever had living with great friends. If things didn't turn to crap it would have been an awesome year. Unfortunately things went belly-up. At least "Kim" and I are still getting along fine, even though she's hardly ever around lately.

I would only live with my absolute best friends if I had to live with friends rather than strangers (as with strangers, terms are agreed upon more concretely and logically). But yeah, I hope you get through this alright. Just make sure to budget your time - don't let all this drama get in the way of getting work done.

sucks to hear.

even though the OP is ranting more than soliciting advice, I'm curious as to how renting works as far as rent agreements.....I would think that if people signed an agreement making them individually responsible for rent, then individuals like the OP wouldn't be stuck with the bill should someone leave. my cousin once had roommates leave for the summer and he was stuck paying the rent, as i recall....

I don't know how things work elsewhere but over here the landlord draws up a lease agreement, which includes the weekly rent for the house itself. Each tenant signs the agreement and then it's a matter of deciding amongst yourselves how the payment will be made each week. Ideally you'd all sign a contract to give yourselves some legal leverage in case something crappy happens (like it has in my case).

The landlord has to cover his own ass and as it stands he has legal recourse against any or all of us, instead of just the one rogue guy who took off.

Well, Hubert is a worthless piece of shit. Sleeping with your roomie's girlfriend? What a fucktard.

But Jim, if he's on the lease, is still legally responsible. You may need to take legal action and sue the rent money out of him.

But you should kick the shit out of Hubert for being suck a worthless fucktard in the meantime.

I agree that it's a shitty thing to do to your flatmate / friend, no doubt. Like I said I have left a lot of details out but there isn't really anything to excuse him. To make matters worse, 'Sally' and 'Hubert' are now a couple it seems.

'Jim' has left some stuff in his room so I'll start selling his shit before I resort to legal action, but if it comes to that then so be it. I don't really want to kick the shit out of anyone, 'Hubert' and I are still good friends and I have intentionally abstracted myself away from all of these shenanigans in the hope of retaining all of my preexisting friendships when it all shuffles out.

There's only one thing to do, Martin. You and 'Kim' need to bang 'Sally'. :)

Your detective work is impressive, young Sherlock :) How did you get my name anyway? Probably somehow attached to my Flickr account I'm guessing.
EDIT - oh yeah, and your ideas intrigue me and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
