Yet another feel good Apple Thread.

Went to Apple today to check out the new MacBook Airs, so I figured if I am going to take the trip, I'll go ahead and take my 13" MBP with shattered screen along for the ride.

When I got there, I made a Genius appointment and waited about 20 minutes, and the guy asked WTF happened. I told him how it cracked and I started to pick at it to try and clean off the glass. I was told it would cost $380 to replace the screen, but they'll fix it this time for free. :)

I am pumped. It'll take about 5 days to be repaired and they'll call me when it's done. I can't wait. I missed having a Mac to mess around with.

The best thing in the world is my friend, who despises Apple, was with me. He kept talking about how they'll do nothing for me and charge $600 to repair it - the look on his face was precious when they said they'd fix it for free.

I was just like you see - Apple isn't so bad. lol, I think he died a little bit inside.

I just had a similar experience with my iPhone 4. The power button became more difficult to press Friday night - it no longer clicked, and I had to push it hard to turn off the screen. I made an appointment for the next evening. I'm glad I did, because the next day the power button was barely working at all.

I was one month out of warranty so I expected to have to pay to have it fixed - I figured I'd be happy with something in the $100 range. The genius bar guy took it in the back to take it apart and see if he could fix it there, but he wasn't able to. He said they'd have to replace it, and that it'd cost $199. I didn't object, but he immediately followed up with "buuuuuut because it's just out of warranty we'll make a one time exception and replace it for free."

Having local support people is one of the upsides to owning Apple products. I don't often need it, but it's nice to know that if I have a problem I can just drive down to the mall and get it taken care of.

They panicked when they saw you picking at the glass and thought lawsuit for cut finger while in store if they didn't fix it.

Thumbs up for Apple doing the right thing. Companies could learn so much from Apple.

My luck has not been so great.

My problem with Apple's warranty repairs is that pretty much nothing is covered, but "they'll do it for free this time" for most people. I tend to be, very consistently, one of the people that they don't feel like being nice to.

Lenovo, Dell, and HP, on the other hand, spell out what they will and will not cover, very clearly, and do so without any hassle. Why can't Apple do this? Why can't they say "one screen replacement per warranty term" or whatever? That way everyone gets fair treatment...

I'm happy for you, amdhunter. I remember that old thread - never in a million years did I think they'd cover it! Score. And if you're between your Core 2 Duo MBP 13 and a Core i5 Air, I'd say go for the air if you can afford it and don't mind the smaller hard drive. The only reason why I don't have an 11" Air is because I don't have the money for two Mac's; my 15" MBP is my desktop replacement. Only computer I've got ;)

Every time I look at the air, I can't get over the ugly bezel. It's the same reason I don't like how the 15 and 17" MBP's look either, but with them it's the bezel on each side of the keyboard instead of the screen.

I think the MBP 13" is the sweet spot - if I upgrade, it'll be another 13" MBP. I don't think moving from this one to the new one is worth it - I like the nvidia graphics. Or is the Intel faster?

I like the plain aluminum bezel, it is more 'Mac Traditional' as it were. My old PowerBook has the same thing.

And the GPUs are about the same in the day to day. The 320m is more powerful for most gaming I think, but it is hard to offset how much better the new CPU is.

I seriously doubt any other company would do this. Either the parts don't cost them that much or there doing this to keep a loyal userbase.

I don't know about you, but for me, on my shortlist of companies to which I am loyal, how their CS treats me in odd situations rates pretty high.

I played through Portal 2 on my MacBook, so I am happy with it. I couldn't turn on all the effects, but it looked great and had a steady framerate.

I don't think I'd be able to pull that off with Intel graphics lol. I am *very* happy now and am buying a bigger SSD for it today.

Yea there's not much of a difference with the new ones, especially if yours already dies what you need it to do. The new ones are just a bit faster - no groundbreaking new features or anything. Thunderbolt is pretty useless since there are like 2 peripherals out there, both being prohibitively expensive (RAID array and the Apple Thunderbolt Display/CinemaView or whatever it's called). Also, I believe the C2D models have a better battery life.

dropped my ipad 2 yesterday and cracked the glass. my wife had it replaced for free this morning. turns out apple has an unofficial policy to do this one time on a case by case basis

i was looking at a cheapo laptop next year, but will probably get a MBP instead now

The Thunderbolt Display is $999, but that is roughly the same price as any other LED backlit IPS display at 2560*1440 resolution. Plus if you have a Thunderbolt equipped Mac it is even better than before. 2 hookups not 3, powers your laptop and gives you FW800, USB2, speakers and gigabit ethernet.

Plus it has a Thunderbolt port for daisychaining.

yeah i got my upper case, lower case, logic board, screen (glossy to matte 17") all free - no charge. pretty much they swapped the battery, ram,hd into a completely new chassis. came back had a lid-close problem and they swapped the logic board again! :) thank god for no activation on o/s :)
