It's nothing new for my ears to get plugged up with wax... I usually just use Debrox for a couple of days, the ear wax comes out, and the situation resolves itself. Not this time.

A week and a half (or thereabouts) ago, my right ear suddenly got plugged up -- like, I didn't notice any hearing problems in it one day, and when I woke up the next day, I couldn't hear out of it. A couple of days later, I bought some more Debrox and did the usual - applied 10 or so drops twice a day. I've never had to do that for more than a couple of days before the stuff drains out and it's fine. But this time, it didn't work... I've been doing the Debrox thing for about a week, with no results at all. I've been getting headaches as well (which I've been attributing to this, but my jaws are also swollen in the 4 places where wisdom teeth grow, so I'll probably need to have them surgically extracted soon) -- anyway, not sure if the headaches are from the ears or teeth or what. I decided that I needed to get help, but I don't have a general physician, and I certainly don't want to go to the ER for something this minor. I'd heard about CVS MinuteClinic - figured I'd give that a try.

I went to MinuteClinic tonight, about 2 hours ago. The Family Nurse Practitioner said that both of my ears were fully blocked with wax (even though I thought that I could hear perfectly fine out of my left ear). Nonetheless, she insisted that she needed to do the irrigation on both ears. For my right ear - the one that I hadn't been able to hear out of - it didn't dislodge anything at all. I didn't gain any hearing, etc. In short, nothing happened. I didn't want her to try my left ear in case it made the situation worse, but she was adamant, so I gave in - hell, she's the one with the education, no me, so I listened. Well, guess what. I left her office 15 minutes later, fully unable to hear out of either ear. The waterpik thing must have dislodged or loosened or did something to the wax in my left ear, because I had been able to hear just fine, but then couldn't. The nurse explained, in writing, that this is normal, to administer saline drops to my ears twice per day for the next 5 days, and then to return to her office next week. WTF. I CAN'T FUCKING HEAR AT ALL. NOTHING. And she tells me this is normal, come back in a week.

Was dizzy when I stood up, somehow made it to my truck and drove the hour home. (In other news, I must use wind volume or engine volume or something to help determine my speed, because I wasn't driving even *close* to what I thought I was driving, every time I looked at my spedometer.) I just took a q-tip to my left ear, trying to do anything to regain at least a little hearing. I did get some wax out of it, but not a tremendous amount. At least now I can hear most noises, even if they do sound infinitely quieter than they should. The right ear is still fully blocked.

So what does Dr. ATOT advise? I'd read about having doctors irrigate ears before - and talked to several people that have had it done - and everyone said that it was great, never had a problem with it, left the office like brand new. I'm downright furious right now.... though for no reason I suppose, I don't know who I could be mad at. Probably not helping my blood pressure, either... which was high enough she suggested I find a doctor to see tomorrow.

Sigh. I need advice from someone other than that infuriating woman.

Yeah, water irrigation always works wonders with me, and this is from someone who is extremely nervous about getting water blasted into the ear considering my history of having swimmers ear a few times.

Clean your ears daily.

How? The way that all doctors, nurses, and medical professionals strongly discourage? I've tried that.

Also tried just flushing my ears with water, periodically... doesn't help.

Has your local weather had any large pressure changes lately? I had a similar problem
with my right ear in June and after cleaning my ear and whatnot I couldn't get in unplugged or here cleanly with it. One day I mentioned it to my neighbor and he said it was probably the low pressure we were experiencing. I live in Salt Lake and in June we had a very unseasonably wet and cloudy month and I think that was the problem. After a couple of weeks it eventually cleared itself out and was normal again.

Just clean your ears in the shower. No q-tip, just use your fingers. They're too fat to go in too far so you can't cause damage.

How many times did she try shooting the water in each ear with the syringe? I had a huge chunk of earwax plugged in my ear (couldn't hear at all out of my right ear) and it probably took about 6 refills before it came out.

I too have excessive ear wax. Best method I've found to get rid of it is with hydrogen Peroxide by syringe. Fill the canal and let it bubble away. Any drug store cares it.

I had the same thing happen to me once. Woke up one day completely unable to hear out of one ear. After trying to clean it with my finger in the shower and just letting hot water run into it to try and flush it (it didn't fix it), I decided to do some research and then ended up buying some of that debrox stuff and used it to no avail, even using and ear syringe to flush it several times after with lukewarm water. Decided not to panic and just keep at it 2-3 times a day for a couple days. It was scary because stuff was coming out (indicating successful wax evacuation) but I was remaining deaf in the one ear (implying I was still deaf even with wax removed and thus perhaps had permanently damaged hearing). Finally decided one day to keep applying drops and then flushing several times and repeating that process until junk stopped coming out. And thats when it finally happened, a huge mass of earwax eventually came out, and I mean huge as in more than I thought could have possibly been backed up in there, especially after the first few days when bits and pieces would come out. After that huge mass came out I could hear perfectly.

Ever since I've tried to make it a habit to use the debrox stuff and flush preemptively about once a month or so.

My best uneducated guess simply based off of experience and my own reasoning is that what had happened is that the wax was so backed up that it created a perfect seal (thus the deafness) and thus to get rid of it, it required several treatments to dissolve away enough of the wax to shrink it enough for that seal to be broken before the biggest mass causing the blockage came out. The active ingredients in the debrox stuff seemed harmless enough to keep using it more than the directions indicated, so I kept using it as long as I didn't experience any induced discomfort or pain.

Fascinating. I've never had any issues, I use q-tips daily after my shower. I do have unusually large ears / ear canals though, maybe that helps prevent buildup. I think q-tips are discouraged by the medical community because the average person is about as smart as a grapefruit and will probably hurt themelves, not because they cause any real problems.

Yea I don't shove mine in all the way. I just lightly rub it.
