Power towers + gravity + me = feel like a total pansy

I'm not exceptionally good at any exercise. But good grief nothing makes me feel as weak as that instrument of pain does. It's so simple to use, but hard to beat. Pullups, wide grip pullups, dips, close grip pushups off the pushup bars. Gah!

I'm a masochist because it kicks my ass...but for some reason I look forward to workouts on it. It's nice knowing that you can beat gravity + your own body weight. It's kind of a true showing of strength to me.

I suck at doing 3 fingered pushups, hand stand pushups, or one handed pullups. j/k. I can't do any of these. Although when I was younger, I could do hand stand push ups.

I am not that good at pull-ups. I can only do about 7 in a row before I get tired. Anaerobic sucks anyways, I can lift a lot, but it doesn't do you that much good in a real situation. Aerobic and cardio is so much better. I get my lifting by helping friends move or own body weight lifting. In college I could bench max 225 though, but all that muscle weight didn't make me any better at sports.

I agree - deadlifts should pwn any normal human being who works out. There's nothing that should make you feel like you want to throw up more than doing deadlifts.

Yeh, deadlifts and squats certainly do a number on you. But they aren't as humbling as only being able to do two wide grip pullups and then having the pull up bar laugh at you as you grimace and scream your way on the third. 🙂

Today is my leg day in fact 😛 You've probably never trained with an Olympic strength coach. Squats do a number, yes, without a doubt. There's nothing that taxes almost your entire body better than a deadlift.

Because of my last 2 knee surgeries, hamstrings I dread and squats.. But have to do them to get better.

ROFL My 288 pound butt has trouble barely doing 1 pullup.

*cough*weak*cough* 😉

No seriously, in high school I could barely pull off about 2, maybe 3. I've worked out seriously now for about 2-3 years more or less at the gym - I can probably crank off 10-12 pullups or chinups now, Marine style. (completely hanging down, no body jerk/movement, chin completely above bar) You'll get there. 🙂

I know you have a little home gym setup in a room at your house - do you have a lat pull down tower? Those are essentially "weight assisted" pullups - as you gradually add weight to that, the number of pullups you can rip off will increase. 🙂

And I find wide grip pullups easier - the curve on the ends of the bar makes it easier for me for some reaosn.

chin-ups don't happen ... well, in any sort of repetitive fashion anyway. Any weights that isolate the shoulders (upright shoulder press for example) kick my ass.

Yeh, my bowflex has a lat tower. I do a close grip pull down, a wide grip pulldown, behind the back pull downs, and a seated lat row.

When I first got the power tower, I couldn't do a single unaided pull up. I'm up to about 6 unaided now, as you say, marine style. And that is with about 2 months of work. So I'm making progress. 🙂

The wide grips kill me. I'm very long limbed so the leverage isn't in my favor.

Does the Bowflex have an option for kind of a bent over row of any sort? That's a good compound movement that helps put some muscle on.

BTW, great progress for 2 months. Keep up the good work 🙂

It does, but I just normally grab a dumbell and use those.

Agreed. Today is my leg day as well. Sometimes I think putting on a dress and renouncing my manhood would be preferable over doing deadlifts. Squats, while not easy, don't drain you like a good deadlift with tons of weight.
