YAET: stupid buyers running up the bidding

almost makes me wonder if the seller himself was running up the bidding.

the item I was bidding on had been holding steady for 5 days at $25... in the last half hour of the auction, though, some buyer with 0 feedback who just registered a couple days ago raised the auction to the exact max of my proxy bid ($51)

Rossman likes to say proxy bidding is for suckers.

You should snipe like everybody else.

The winning bidder will always beat your max proxy bid by the bid increment. If your max bid was $1, the next bid will be $2, even if the winning bidder's max bid was $500000000.

Possibly not. I've had several auctions that did stuff like that last minute, and I certainly wasn't the one doing the fake bidding. My guess is its other bidders who are doing that, not sure why.

I'm to the point now where I disallow users with zero or negative feedback. As a seller, it's a big PITA to deal with those people.

I'm still the winner... he bid right up to my max proxy bid -- ie: my max bid was $51, and his max was $50.50

Ok, well THAT is lame. What you can do if you suspect any fishy dealings, report to EBay. My best friend works for EBay and although they watch for stuff like that, they need people to report to them most of the time.

I never use ebay but I didn't think the seller could find out how high the proxy bids were?

They can't.
