Okay here's the deal:
I purchased a copy of Half Life 2 from someone on ebay who had high positive feedback. The auction stated "complete in the sealed factory packaging" etc, etc. Everyone else who purchased from this person raved about fast shipping, excellent products, and so on. I did a Buy It Now option and paid same day. The guy didn't even SHIP the game until 9 days after I paid for it (I emailed three times--on third try, he emails back a tracking number for item shipped 9 days later :|). So, when I get it in the mail, I check it over with a fine-toothed comb to make sure it really is sealed. It appears so. I leave neutral feedback about the guy not shipping for 9 days.
So.....later that night I install HL2 and use the Steam installer to enter my CD key. It tells me that that key is already in use! I of course try the key about 10 more times. Same result every time. By now I'm furious. So I send the guy an email to the effect of: "I received item #8166703127 today (NEW HALF-LIFE 2 PC Game). When I installed it, the Steam installer rejected the CD key because it is already in use. I was wondering how this is possible if the item truly is new and factory sealed as your auction stated." I wasn't rude, but asked how he planned to rectify the situation.
He replies back this evening with: "I have no idea. You have opened the item and we do not know what you have done with the CD Keys. Somebody may have hacked keys or who knows, but the item was sealed and New when it was sent and when you received it."
I know I can send in the original key and Valve will reset it (for $10 and a 3-4 weeks to process) but I bought this game with the intent of opening the box, installing, and playing. It was SUPPOSED to be sealed.
I've already left feedback (stupid stupid stupid) so I feel like I don't really have any leverage with this guy. Does anyone have any idea what I should do now?
CLIFF NOTES:
--Bought supposed "sealed" HL2 from buyer with high positive feedback
--Install HL2 only to find out that the CD key is already in use
--I email guy and he tells me: "I have no idea. You have opened the item and we do not know what you have done with the CD Keys. Somebody may have hacked keys or who knows, but the item was sealed and New when it was sent and when you received it."
Ideas? Thanks in advance.
