So, I bought generic batteries for my camera, but they sucked a lot, so I bought a Genuine battery or what I thought was Genuine on eBay.

What I got is a Canon name bearing, illegal counterfeit and not everyone will catch it.

Top view
Left is counterfeit, right is Genuine(came with camera)

Bottom view
Left is counterfeit, right is Genuine

Connector edge
Top is Genuine
Bottom is counterfeit
Note the difference in the shape where the top and half bottom comes together on the sides. Also see that the genuine one has a sticker in the rectangular area while the counterfeit doesn't.

side view
Top=counterfeit
Bottom=Genuine
Difference is the thickness of top and bottom pieces.

Fell apart
The counterfeit one was put together so poorly, the top lid fell off while taking the battery out of the charger. There were pieces of broken PCB board crammed in between the battery and a connector PCB.

Topic Summary: Digital camera battery.. who would've thought counterfeit for that...

actually, it's really not as uncommon as you think. most "genuine" camera batteries on ebay are more likely to be counterfeit. that's why they are so inexpensive.

Its to bad that that the battery didnt have any CSA/UL agency approvals on them, that way you caould contact the respective agency and they would inturn open a counterfeit investigation on the person that sold the stuff. CE is a self declared mark that any yahoo can put on their product.

You can usually tell by reading the auction listing. Would you mind posting a link, so that we can show you and others what to watch for?

basically, don't buy genuine items from ebay... that's your safest bet. I would trust bhphoto oh so much more if i were looking for genuine batteries (but I'm good w/ the generics... from sterlingtek :))

I contacted the seller. He did not realize he was selling counterfeit batteries and said the dealer screwed him over. He immediately gave me a full refund + return postage and withdrew his auctions on ongoing items.

As for the link, I rather not give my eBay S/N here.

You know, one of these days, someone is going to cook their expensive camera. And the schnooks who sold the battery would'nt care, because all the evidence would have been eviscerated by flaming lithium.

what kind of packaging did it come in? did you compare the packaging to other sellers that sell the battery, but at a much higher price (maybe more likely to be authentic)?

Which is a good reason not to take chances and only buy manufacturers batteries from reputable places.

But the point is, if something had happened you'd be covered. You tell some guy on Egay you fryed your 1200+ prosumer camera hes gonna tell you tough tittie and to go pound sand.
You go into a reputable camera shop and say hey this Canon battery fried my Canon prosumer camera, you have a leg to stand on.

Wow durr.

I sure like the fact that the counterfeit was written in Japanese.
While the real one was written in 3 different languages :)
