I paid around $1100. That was enough. Really even that is ridiculous. Talk about amazing marketing on the part of jewlery stores to make women think they need more.

those look like dirt as it's worn a lot.. the gia report shows it very clean

edit:
yeah i check the report, there are a few "feathers" on the bottom. Its a VS2 not a VVS1
its 5 levels down from the "flawless" diamond

I paid about $4k for mine when I was still a college student (it took me about 4 years to save that much). It didn't work out but I got the ring back (thank God) and sold it back to the jeweler and got a portion of my investment back (he gave me an extra 10% back when I told him that the bitch went behind my back with another guy). I went out and bought a bunch of high end electronics for myself. If I do get married in the future, I'd probably spend $10k on a ring. If the gal has small fingers, I would go for a better clarity/cut, but smaller diamond whereas if she had fat fingers, I'd go for a bigger diamond but lower in clarity/cut.

$1000

White gold with an opal in-lay and a 1/4 carrot diamond.
It's pretty, she liked it and she said yes. 😀

I don't understand spending more than that.

We were young and poor when we got married 31 years ago, so she was willing to settle for an inexpensive set, but I've more than make it up to her over the years. I enjoy buying the pretty sparkly rocks for her, and do so rather often...

Spent 1540...bought the ring from a family friend that is a jeweler so I got it at cost...it independently appraised for about $3500.

0.45 carat, VVS1, color E (it was appraised D but family friend said it was E), princess cut, solitare setting, simple white gold band... I went for quality over quantity. Everyone makes comments about my wifes ring because diamond sparkles like a mofo in any light.

5 carats for only $75k? That must have been a pretty ugly diamond.

Are you sure about this?

Generally, I see people selling stuff for about 40% of what they bought it for.

Yeah, there's a stigma attached to "used" diamonds, many women would not be happy if they found out their diamond was previously worn by someone else (unless it's an heirloom stone). I think the only way you'll get anywhere close to what you paid for a diamon if you sell it is with the assistance of inflation.

dont think tiffany sells bad diamonds

At Bluenile.com you'd have to spend $200k to get a nice quality 5 carat diamond, $75k will only get you a good 2.5 carat diamond. I'm sure Tiffany's is more expensive than Blue Nile. Unfortunately so many people care more about the size of the diamond than how good it looks. Bling bling yo.

if i have to spend more than 600 bucks then the girl is not for me.

i refuse to pay that much money for a pile of non perfect carbon atoms. hell, the carbon stuck to my grill out back holds more value for me, at least i can eat that stuff if i'm stranded on an island.

don't remember the color or clarity ranks

Damn, you got ripped off...

Mine is 1.02ct, D color, surrounded by 6 diamonds (3 on each side of the main) totalling 0.75 carats of E color, set in white gold for $5300. Of course this was directly from an importer that I know. He urged me NOT to get platinum because it fades, is a lot softer, and WAY too expensive for what it is.

Almost everyone who buys diamonds by the carat in this thread paid retail money. In the rest of the world, you buy based on how many points a diamond has. Generally the breaking point is around 1/2 a carat. The more points, the more I'll pay, but on a lot of the items that people have posted here - there's anywhere from 2 to 500% markup.
