I've been shopping for a replacement LCD for my Dell laptop which broke a few months ago. The model out of my laptop was a Philips LP154WP1, WXGA+ (1440x900) resolution screen. I searched on ebay for that model number and a lot of replacement part auctions came up with various model screens, and then one auction which listed the specific part number LP154WP1 15.4' WXGA+ screen. I figured perfect, not only is it the resolution I need, it's the exact part, bonus! The seller had good feedback, so I bid and won that item.

Flash forward to last friday the item arrives. The first problem, it's not a Philips screen, it's an AU Optronics screen. I figured I could live with that, as long as it worked and was the right resolution. So I pop this thing in my laptop, fire it up and it only supports 1280x800 WXGA resolution. Not only is it not the correct part number listed in the auction, it's not even a comparable item.

So I send a message to the seller indicating this, and asking him to either send the correct item, or if he doesn't have it to refund my money and I will return the screen. I immediately get resistance from the seller saying that listing the Philips part number and putting that that screen was WXGA+ was a "copy and paste error" and also that his auction stated no returns. I responded the no returns assumed the part listed in the auction was the part I received, which it was not. I told him had he stated in his auction that this was a WXGA screen and not a WXGA+ screen which he listed it as, I never would have purchased it. He claims that since I installed the part, it's not his problem anymore, even though the part he sent was not the part he listed.

So I've already filed a dispute with Paypal about this, awaiting word. Just seeing what you guys think.

EDIT 9/16:

So Paypal ruled in my favor. If I return the item I get the refund. I also left him negative feedback.

You are definitely right. The idiot doesn't post the auction correctly and then he says it isn't his problem?

No doubt you are in the right.

Basically what he is doing is scamming the buyers. Listing it as one thing and selling something else.

I've honestly never had a transaction go south after all my time using ebay. Should I neg him now before the Paypal dispute is over, or wait until it's resolved?

Hold off on the neg. Use it as more leverage with the seller. Depending on the resolution you should still be able to neg him after you get your money back.

Where is the "nuke him from orbit" response? Or does that only work for huge ass scary spiders? :)

You are correct - you received the wrong item. I'm pretty sure paypal/ebay has a buy protection plan...

You should use it as leverage and then neg him regardless of the outcome. The seller deserves a negative for being a complete douche.

Eff that. You bought something based on the description HE posted. The description is incorrect - the product you got is not what he advertised. You are right

as a seller I put no returns as I am not WalMart.

All of my items are exactly as described and usually feedback indicates they came much better than the buyer anticipated.

If I allowed returns I'd have people picking up my items as free loaners while shopping still or their item is being RMA'd.

There was a thread on ATOT about people that buy tools, use them and then return them based on a 'satisfaction' warranty...ebay would be full of that plus even worse is when I did allow for returns you'd get back a different serial number and a broken item.

If what you said is true, do everything you can to inform his potential future buyers that he is a dickwad.

The seller is in the wrong.

Dispute it with paypal if he doesn't pony up, they should refund you.

Neg the seller to (try and) prevent other people from falling foul of a similar fate.

i agree 100%. I don't sell shoddy or broken stuff unless I specifically state as-is or broken(as i did with a cell phone i was selling for parts), so I'm not dealing with tools who either can't figure things out, or want to use me as a rental service.

So in the dispute, look what this dude has the balls to post:

Had I been contacted regarding the items in question before the buyer proceeded with installation, the issue would not be in question. The parts were listed as original OEM Dell parts and were purchased from Dell direct. The parts include the original OEM LCD panel, LCD bezel, and original top cover for a Inspiron 6400/E1505 laptop. This is how the auction was described and that is what the buyer received. The auction was not advertised as providing aftermarket or "upgrade" parts. The auction was however advertised as providing the original Dell parts that Dell would send you to repair your laptop. These parts require professional installation and must be handled with care, therefor the auction had a no return policy.

First I'm not trying to "upgrade" my screen. The screen that broke was a WXGA+ screen, so that's what I tried to replace it with. Second, why on earth does that matter anyway? I purchased what I thought was a WXGA+ screen, he sent me a WXGA screen, end of story.

BTW, here is a link to the auction in question. You can see right in the listing that not only did he describe the screen as "Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505 LCD, LP154WP1 15.4' WXGA+" he linked to another auction that was specifically selling an LP154WP1 15.4' WXGA+ screen.

Seems this seller was selling a non-OEM LCD as a LP154WP1 which he was selling as a Dell original. Pretty messed up.
