1. Won item (hard drive) on Monday Jan 22.
2. Sent money order Xpresspost Tuesday Jan 23.
3. Seller claims to receive money order Monday morning Jan 29. Says I will get a UPS tracking number by 'Wednesday evening at the latest'. I don't know why it would take 3 days to get a tracking number as UPS generates them when you create the shipment.
4. Wednesday Jan 31 passes. I email seller twice. He says he gets 70-80 emails a day and will 'have a tracking number when it becomes available to [him]'.
5. Still no tracking number or package on Thursday Feb 1.

both of us have 100% feedback. but i'm used to shipping/paying the same day.

you can be irritated, but if he has 100% rating I wouldn't worry just yet. Did have a similiar experience a few weeks ago...seller claimed he shipped the night I sent him the money, but had no TN to prove it...I emailed him asking for proof for 12 days before I stuck AMEX on his ass...I had my refund from him 1 day after they contacted him...

I would vote for yes. As soon as you click on the submit button a tracking number is assigned. He is stalling for some unknown reason.

UPS tracking numbers are generated by UPS Connect as soon as you create the shipment, or they are present on the waybill. That's no excuse.

he says his drop-shipper is still processing the shipment and regrets the delay. i suggested he go out and buy the drive and ship it to me and cut his losses. it's been 8 days since he received payment.

Not unreasonable to ask.. that is the risk he assumes by selling items that are not in hand.

i feel bad having to ask that, but this was a money order transaction and not a paypal where he could have easily refunded or something. i'll probably give it another week before i completely freak out. ;)

This is starting to get a bit (more) sketchy.

He contacted me saying he was instead going to send a WD RE2 (RAID edition) instead of a KS SE16 because they were 'obviously out of stock and not telling [him]'. I say I'll pay for an additional drive (since it's the RAID version) and mailed a cheque out today.

Tonight I get an email from another customer of his, saying he's ordered 11 drives from him, and received them all, but is worried about a scam. I will cliff notes it for you:

1) Auction is won on eBay, buyer sends payment.
2) Seller has a drive sent out from Western Digital Advance RMA to the customer's address. Seller needs to use a credit card with WD to initiate this process. WD sends out the drive, and per their terms, must receive a defective drive within 120 days or the credit card will be charged.
2a) The seller is using fake emails and phone numbers on the RMA form. Examples are johndoe@fastmail.fm, johndoerma@fastmail.fm, etc. and some phone number from your area.

Trying to find out more information and contact other buyers to check the RMA status on WD's website to see if WD has received defective drives in return.

Whoa!

So, he is getting drives sent from WD on the strength of a credit card... which is fake... and he is getting money for the drives. By the time the 120 days is up, the ebay account will be gone and the CC company will not pay, as the CC is stolen.

Slick.

I hope he goes to jail, if that is what he is doing.

He is selling new/refurb WD drives shipped straight from WD? So once he sells a refurb from WD, he buys a broken WD and sends it in?

No, he uses a credit card to get the drive sent first. then he has 120 days to send in the FUBARed drive or the credit card will be charged for the price of the drive. So, he lists a drive on ebay, gets the drive shipped from WD to the ebay winner. He collects the money from the ebay winner and by the time the WD starts looking for their drive... 120 days later... they will charge the credit card, which is stolen.

At least, that is how i read it.

Well, WD usually ships the drives on time, and they would also not be 'coming after' the eBay buyer because it's not their credit card.

He also has Maxtor drives for auction.

Why wouldn't he have perfect feedback on eBay?

All the buyers are getting their drives.

;)

Best case scenario, this is what is happening; which is at least somewhat legit.

Just spoke with WD. To summarize the 68 minute phone call,

1. WD requires you put down a credit card when you do an advance RMA. It turns out the seller is using different credit cards for each RMA from all across the USA. One time, a card from Iowa was declined, and it was followed up immediately with a card from California which was approved.
2. The WD rep couldn't say whether I could keep the drives or not.
3. It's being escalated to the powers that be and I have to wait.

Perhaps a dumb question, but should I put a stop on the cheque for $135 for the second drive? He already has a $135 money order from me which I doubt I'll see back.
