I went to the dentist about a month ago for a checkup, I hadnt been in about 4 years and this was a new (to me) dentist.

During the exam he told the record keeping person "mild to moderate gingivitis" as my gums bled when they poked them, they did not bleed when they were flossed.

So, they recommend a "PerioChip" treatment, but my argument with them was if it's mild/moderate, cant i floss and brush realy well to get rid of it. Oh, the procedure was something like $1200 with my insurance. I mentioned could this be avoided by doing alot better at flossing and brushing (which I have been doing).

I know i'm not prodivding much info so i'll give more if necessary. What i'm trying to decide is if I should do this or pay the $150 or so and get another checkup with another dentist for a second opinion

you should ask for a "scaling " I think its called where they clean your teeth below the gum line, from then on floss and brush conscientiously.

Sounds like they are selling you a $1200 bottle of mouthwash?

That's what I was thinking but they explained it that mouthwash wont get below the gum line *shrug*

I believe they said a scaling would be the first part of this procedure, after the scaling they'd put these chips in.

i had a dentist office try to sell me 4 deep scaling sessions for $300 each.

got the same procedure done at a dental school for $100.

don't let them rip you off. i've never seen dentists so hungry for your $$.

This is common. I worked in a dental office as an assistant to a dentist for a couple years.

Gingivitis can be taken care of relatively easy with daily use of mouthwash, brushing, and cut down on anything sugary like sodas or candy a little bit.
It will be gone in a week. All that gingivitis is is inflamation. It's your gums purposly bleeding to help remove bacteria.

If gingivitis IS THE ONLY REASON do what I just said. (obviously, a dentist with 6+ years dental school is going to know better than my 1 year of assisting school)
But they will get you for any amount of money possible. So if it is in fact only gingivitis, just do as I said.

If there is more to it such as calculus buildup(tartar) or dental carries you should just go ahead and go through what he suggested. Perio work helps maintain the structure of your teeth. It will include what is called 'scalling' most definatly which removes calculus. (plaque turns into calculus.. it's that yellow stuff that doesn't come off normally. It eventually eats through your tooth)
