YADT: Deciding on Digicam for fiancee's father...

I am no Digicam expert, but reading reviews has helped me jump on a Canon bandwagon for digicams. I am getting (hopefully) an A70 + 256MB card as my main christmas gift.

My fiancees father heard me talking about it and said he wants to buy one, but wants a cheaper model. I recommended Buy.com's Hot Deal (Canon A300 for $124) but those are out of stock / on order and he said he doesn't want to wait to buy one, he wants one this week or next week.

Sooo, I then recommended a Canon A60... amazon has it for $175ish with free shipping. He asked if he would notice a picture quality difference between the A60 and A300... and I told him basically the optics were the same and that he would only notice a difference if he were printing an 8x10 picture. But then again, he has a very very crappy printer and doesn't print photos anyway...

But I feel guilty recommended a 2MP camera... like maybe it's gonna be obsolete by next year or something. What is a good camera with zoom under $200? He was really impressed with A70 example shots I showed him.

I think you were right in going for the Canon A60, NewEgg.com has the A60 for $182 with free shipping.

If I were buying a budget digicam I would get the Canon A60 or Fuji Finepix A210 for $169 from OfficeMax.com after $30 off $150.

i have a finepix

nice camera (2650) but the xD cards are too pricey, got the cam half price so it didnt bother me too much, but i wouldnt reccomend it based on the memory

The thing with cameras....there really is not end of life/obsoleteness...they will always do what you want.

You need to find the purpose first. For a lot of people their best bet is a 20+year old Canon A1 SLR 🙂.....

2mp is far from obsolete. I have a S200 paired with a Sony dye-sub printer and I'm quite pleased with the results.
