A300 is awsome, I love mine. Optical zoom is overhyped IMO, you can do just fine without it.
You know, it's true. I'm not even really being biased because I own one either. My opinion is that zoom in the 3X-6X range is near useless for getting better pictures of something off in the distance - get a camera with lens threads on the front so you can put on your own custom zoom lenses, go the cheap but great quality route with cameras like the A300, or get something that does all the A300 does with a mediocre zoom like the A70 with a very significant bump up in price.
I've been doing some amateur photography with my Canon A300 and a tripod lately. Here are some of my results so far - I think they look good.

If those pics were taken with an A300 they look great!
They sure were.
🙂 My breakdown of good/bads:
The pros:
- The voice countdown for timed shots is GREAT! So useful in getting people prepped for group shots!
- The autofocusing system will take better shots without your goddamn input, so leave it alone.
😉
- Runs on 2 regular AA batteries, so no expensive outlay of cash on custom batteries that you are forced to purchase from a specialty store or the camera maker.
And a few minor caveats to the A300...
- The flash is located way too close to the lens, with no external flash mount ability. Typical of any consumer-oriented digital camera but should still be noted as an issue.
- Notice the curvature of the images around the edges of the shot. Apparently this is normal and can't be avoided unless you purchase a SERIOUS digital camera, meaning forking over some equally serious cash.
