YADSLRT: flash photography!

K well I have been having a lot of fun with my rebel XT and last night I took it out to shoot some pictures for my friend's birthday. Before that I went home this weekend and found a hotshoe flash that's like over 20 years old! Popped 4 AA batteries in it and I'm good to go. No E-TTL, TTL or anything. I have to user manual mode for the proper exposure. I'm fairly new to SLR/DSLR photography, much less on flash photography with an external flash (oh nooooes).

Good! Light is your friend! I see way too may people trying to get by without. My son is one who prefers "natural" light. That's all well and good if there's enough of it, or you're using a tripod. I understand the desire to take the picture as it appears in the viewfinder, but many times that's just not possible, especially with the super tiny lenses that come in these pocketable cameras.

There's such a thing as diffusers and bounce flash to keep the artificial lighting and glare at a minimum. It will take as much work to get used to the flash, as it does to compose nice shots. It comes with patience and practice.

BTW, I bet the cops were just thrilled with your efforts!

He actually waved at us after I took the pic. I was completely sober (had to drive the drunk friends home hah).

the external flash gives me so much more room to work in the dark. I mean I can't afford a 5D with a ISO of 3200 & minimum noise. The pics were taken at 1/200 sec, f7.1-9.0. SO much room to work with & I can keep the ISO level at a minimum.

I basically outgrew my powershot S50, manual settings were great and it allowed me to learn so much about photography but after a while it just seemed way too limiting.
