YADPT = Yet Another DVD Player Thread

Yes, I have looked but all of the other threads I saw were for the sub $100 range.

I'm currently eyeing THIS ONE , its a JVC XV-FA90BK: 7-disc carousel DVD/CD/DVD-Audio changer with progressive scan and DTS/DD5.1 Decoders built in. Is there any other player in this price range that can compete?

Also, wtf happened to Pioneer DVD players? Did they stop making them? I tried their website but I can't get to it. I wanted a Pioneer DVD to match my Pioneer HT system but I can't seem to find them anywhere. :(

Thank You for your time,
J.

Pioneer DVD's were so crappy I wouldnt be surprised if they did stop making them. You can get a good onkyo prog scan dvd player for less than $150, one of the best out there IMHO

After doing alot of research, I just got a Panasonic XP30. They supposedly have the second best image quality of any DVD. It came in second only to the $500 Denon 1600.

Unfortunately, they are discontinued and hard to find. Sharper Image has it online but it is called the PA500. The DVD player has the highly sought after Faroudja DCDi chip along with the Genesis Fli2200 deinterlacer. For the money, it is the best progressive scan DVD player out there. I'm sure it you could spare another $20 more to get it. The one major drawback I see with it, and it doesn't bother me, is that it doesn't have an coax digital out. If you want digital surround, you need to have an optical capable receiver.

What is this DVD player replacing for me? My $600 Sony DVD just got the C 13 00 00 error which basically means I am screwed. My bro in law also got it but was able to repair his DVD. Do NOT get a Sony DVD player. They are all subject to this terrible problem. It is a quality control issue at Sony and it afflicts most of their DVD players from high to low end.

Here is a good guide on DVDs.

Well, thing is I don't really need the prgressive scan as I don't have a digital TV but the DTS is nice since my reciever only decodes DD5.1

If you don't need progressive scan, you could save yourself some money and go with just about anything. Just don't buy a Sony. Read some of these testimonials. There are similar ones for their other models too.
