I was just reading Dezign's thread on domain names and I have a question. If you already have a URL registered but found a different provider for less $ (thanks to Rossman! :beer😉 How do you go about switching over to the different provider? Do you let it expire and then quickly snatch it up later or Can they transfer it over to the new cheaper provider? If so, which site do you email regarding that? I asked the new provider this question and they haven't gotten back to me yet.

Do not let it expire because places hold on to it for months before actually releasing it.

Additionally, do you mean a new hosting provider or a new domain provider?

You transfer the domain from your current provider to your new provider, don't let it expire IMO 🙂

Oh I meant hosting provider, but I registered the domain name through them too.

Transfer the domain name to either godaddy or namecheap. Then all you need to do is change the nameservers to point to your new hosting.

Yes that is what I need to know how to do, how does one go about changing the nameservers to point to the new hosting? Sorry if it's a silly noobile question, but I do appreciate your help on it.

You must first transfer your domain to godaddy.com or namecheap.com

Once it's transferred there is an account management feature there that let's you change the name servers.
