YADLPRPHDTVT: Who makes the largest rear projection DLP HDTV right now?

I've decided to get myself an HDTV and I want something really big. The physical size of the TV isn't really an issue, so I figured a rear projection DLP model would be a good choice.

Consumer Reports said the Toshiba 62HM196 was a good choice and I see it has a 72 inch "big brother". Mitsubishi makes a 73 inch model that looks pretty nice as well.

I'm just curious at this point. I'd like to get a small list of potential TV's together before I head out to check them out in person.

I'm not really in a hurry to buy one since football season is half over, so I could buy one as late as next summer. Will more LCoS and LED projection models be out then? Mitsubishi is saying December 2k7 for their laser models.

A projector is out of the question because I want something I can watch in a room with the lights on or with sunlight coming in. This will be my everyday TV.

Mits and Sony both have 71 and 73" versions I believe.

I lean more towards the sony over the DLP from a picture quality perspective. I'm in the same boat. 65" is too small and plasmas at that size are still a little pricey.

I noticed that these seem realtively cheap $800 - $1200 for the 50" to 62" range. Am I missing something on these? They all say HD Ready, but how much does an HD tuner cost anyway?

Sony has a 70 inch SXRD model, but it's quite expensive. Money isn't a huge deal, but $6000 is borderline too much, especially when the Toshiba is about $1700 cheaper. I realize they're different technologies (regular DLP versus LCoS I think). Plus on AVSforum, I've heard bad things about "green blobs" with Sony's TVs.

Is there a good retailer online that stocks a bunch of brands? It's hard to compare different models because most retailers don't stock every brand. Crutchfield has a good selection, but they don't stock Mitsubishi, for example.

The only model I mentioned, the Toshiba 62HM196, is about $2200-2500 online. Older technology DLP TV's might be cheaper than that, especially if they don't have a tuner built in. I think an OTA tuner is something like $100-150 usually. If you have a HDTivo or cable box, then you could buy one without a tuner and be fine.

72" at Crutchfield
And I can not lie :D

I looked at that one and if I was buying one today, that'd be on the short list for sure. I've heard lots of good about that one. There's also a 72HM196 that's not piano black and doesn't have a PC input and it's a bit cheaper. I don't think I'd really use the PC input all that much to warrant the higher price.

Sets using LED bulbs for the projection seem like they're be really nice. They're supposed to last a fair bit longer than regular bulbs, which is a definite plus.
