So, I left work a little bit early today, trying to beat a rainstorm.
About a mile down a major road, the power was out, and the stoplight was blinking yellow in my direction (red to cross traffic.) The traffic in front of me was stopped (even though they shouldn't have been) so I came to a stop.
Then, out of nowhere, a car rear-ended me. (He swerved at the last minute, so the damage is to my rear-passenger and the corresponding damage was to his front-driver side.) I say he swerved mainly to explain that I didn't hit the car in front of me (THANKFULLY).
I pulled off onto the shoulder and called 911. He pulled behind me and got out of his car and came to my window (in the POURING down rain) and asked if I was okay, I said that I was. All the while, I'm relaying our location to the dispatcher as well as descriptions of the two vehicles involved.
Seven minutes later, I notice the guy start nudging forward, as if he's going to leave. I grab a pen and paper and jot down his plate number as he leaves. I then call 911 again and give them the plate number.
I called GEICO to report what is now a hit-and-run accident. The person on the phone said that unless they identify the driver or can confirm the uninsured status of the vehicle, it will be treated as a collision instead of uninsured motorist.
My question for the experts is what are the chances I get that reversed? Worth noting is that I spoke with the cop, they ran the plates and they didn't match the vehicle. So, person either moved the plates without notifying the DMV or the car was stolen and the plates switched in an effort to conceal the crime.
I've got pics of the damaged to my car if anyone is interested. Not sure where to post them.
