What kind of difference do you really get from the different kinds of pump gas, 87, 89, and 93 octane?

In my car - none. My car takes 87. In my wife's car - there isn't a really noticeable difference. (her car takes 91)

If you run 91/93 in a car built for 87, you might take a performance hit. :p

I run 87 in everything I have..

I did find when I was using a high compression turbo engine that in certain conditions, the octane rating did make a difference. I could feel the difference between the 91 octane stuff I got in california vs. the 94 octane stuff I got in Texas while driving cross-country.

For the most part, however... it means absolutely nothing. If you drive an american car, you're mostly fine with just using 87.

Matters a lot for my car. I wouldn't dare run anything but premium unless there was no other choice.

I don't use anything higher than 87. I drive a 97 Ford Taurus, so I don't think I'd see any performance difference, and being 17 (and on a limited income), I would never choose to pay for anything higher than 87.

I have to used 92 octane or else the engine retards timing. Even that is pushing it with the boost over 15psi, I'm thinking about water injection if I actually decide to try going higher with this turbo.

My car was built for 87, so it gets 87. A WRX was built for 93 or 91, and thats what people should put in it.

Every vehicle I own, besides my wifes DeVille, uses and run quite well on 87.
The DeVille, however, requires 91 octane or better, I accidently filled it up with 87 once, ran like crap, was hard to start, & mileage dropped about 4-5 MPG.
I ended up buying 2 bottles of quite expensive Octane Booster just to make it run right until the 87 was out of it.
I bet I don't do THAT again!
