Okay so I have a '94 accord that has an aftermarket alarm system (installed by previous owner). I take pretty good care of it and in the 1.5 years I've owned it I killed the battery for the first time when I went out of town last week.

When I connect the ground jumper cable to the ground in the engine the alarm starts to go off. Clearly, it's getting juice if the alarm is going off and the lights are flashing, etc, but it won't let me start the engine. Alarm just goes off, key turns but the engine won't turn over.

Any thoughts? Or shall I just call AAA :(

Your aftermarket alarm probably went off and killed your battery. A lot of them don't turn off until you turn them off manually.

Nah, I don't even lock my car (therefore not arming the alarm) when my car is in my garage.

Furthermore a door was ajar, which kept the interior light on, which drained the battery.

There's a reason you don't see me posting much in other YACT's. ;)

As I said the alarm was installed by the previous owner so I have no idea. I suppose I could rummage through for a manual...what exactly would I be looking for? :Q

Without jumping? No.

then the alarm, most likely, has a kill switch and won't allow your car to start until it is turned off

Simplest way would be to disconnect the alarm from the battery and hope that there is no battery backup on the alarm. That or find the kill switch for the alarm which should be located under the dash on the drivers side. Usually it is just a black button.

Can't you deactivate the alarm while the jumper cables are hooked up before you start the car? I bet that'd do the trick.

On the Maxima you have to put the key in the trunk lock to turn it off if you disconnect the battery. Maybe this one works like that.

There should be a bypass button under your steering column to turn off your alarm.

gotta love the people that post in these threads

the alarm has a starter kill on it. It wont let you start the car with the alarm going off. There might be a button under your steering column that you have to press while turning the key. If not, look under your dash and find the make and model of the alarm. If you can find that I can help you bypass it.

EDIT: can you post pics of the alarm remote?

Similar thing happend to me. It was my battery cable though. Try making sure your battery cable is put in correctly, tighten the screws if u have too. Give it a good wack if that doesnt work. Thats what got my battery to work. I had a messed up cable.

Just guessing. Since your battery went flat it would be the same as a disconnect.
Just as the radio presets were lost so would the setting on the alarm.
See what type of alarm it is and check on line if there are cautions for car battery
replacement procedures. This alarm is most likly as old as the car and aftermarket.
